Thursday's Thoughts: Does every dog with pancreatitis need a low-fat diet? 🐾
"Low-fat for life" is the advice most dog parents hear after a pancreatitis diagnosis. But is it always necessary?
Low-fat is appropriate during an acute flare. Long term, the evidence is less clear-cut.
A recent study found dogs on a higher-fat diet showed no worse inflammation or pancreatic damage than those on low-fat, while every dog on the low-fat diet developed fat build-up in the liver.
The type of fat matters as much as the amount. A marine omega-3 like Antinol Plus isn't the same as fatty off-cuts, and may help reduce pancreatic inflammation (always check with your vet).
The real question isn't "can this dog eat fat?" It's "how much, and from where?"
