Why do people feel that they are immune from buggering up Mother Nature?
England's rivers are in a precarious state. Just 14% are in good ecological health, and none are achieving good chemical status. Meanwhile, the regulators' responsiveness has been eroded by years of funding cuts.
Reports suggest that environmental protections will be reduced in the next Spending Review – the exact opposite of what our rivers need. We've signed an open letter to the Government, urging it to protect these crucial habitats.
The letter asks the Government to increase the funding and independence of the regulators, so that they can effectively perform their monitoring, enforcement, and prosecution duties. It also proposes more support for farmers who are transitioning to nature-friendly practices.
