Quality vs. Quantity rescue

There's a big difference between these rescues. One will go above and beyond to ensure all the animals who come through their care have all the care, assessments, training, and vet treatment they need before they're rehomed. The other does the bare minimum in order to save as many as possible.

Take Butterball. This boofhead has been in care for 246 days after coming in to care with 26 of his buddies. He has had 2 BOAS surgeries, a week in emergency care, a specialist consult, and will still receive a full dental - on top of the standard vaccinations, heartworm testing, preventatives, desexing, and the additional faecal floats, parasite treatment (oh, the hookworm) and additional care this sweet potato needed.

I know so many rescues who would have just done the bare minimum for them. They wouldn't have spent over $100,000 on this intake to get them to optimal health. And yet, when we list him for adoption, someone is absolutely going to crack it about his adoption fee being too high (despite us being told that the breeder initially purchased him for $26k, as a stud dog 🤯).

Quality rescues need to have reasonable adoption fees on some animals, because let's be honest - the number of animals we've adopted out for less than one tenth of what it costs us to prepare them for adoption, just isn't sustainable.

Please do your research when looking at rescues to support. Some have decent branding, but they hide the fact that they're more focused on the endorphins from saving large quantities of animals than doing the best for them.

And to those rescues, who I see taking complex cases, and just absolutely not doing what's needed - 😭🖕
Please understand that it's ok to say no to these situations if you don't have the capacity to do it to the full extent required. It's better to say no than to half do it and have an animal still living in discomfort. But, knowing why some of you 'rescue' - I know you'll continue doing it for the praise you get, until we can somehow stop you.

BB also says 🖕 to me for the ✂️🍒

For anyone who saw my story last night, you may have spotted a third little pup in the photo 👀

This little cleftie chihuahua joined us yesterday, and BOY does he have a set of lungs on him. Full of sass already 😂

Let's home these boys stay strong and grow up into the funniest trio you've seen in a while

And then, there were two!

Thankfully, this isn't another Wonton rejection - this little man is a cleftie who found his way to me late last night, and is now destined to be Prawn's snuggle buddy 💜

With the trifecta of Adaptil, Zylkene and calcium supplements, Wonton has so far decided to continue mothering her remaining three pups. Fingers crossed she keeps them a little longer 🤞

One week on, and Wonton's second born, first surviving pup is growing well.

Unfortunately, today, Won decided that she didn't want this little one anymore.

I kept my eye on them for as long as possible (mainly via camera, as she still holds a death rage for my presence) and she has not tended to him once. She left him alone, metres from her, while happily attending to her three other babes.

After monitoring closely for signs she did want him still (thankfully I have a temperature controlled whelping space thanks to so it was safe to leave them be and monitor them remotely) after a day of motherly neglect I stepped in and claimed Prawn as my own.

Of course, this prompted even more rage from Wonton, but even relocating him back to her nest earlier hadn't helped, and he was in need of food.

And so, Prawn joins the ranks of handraised babes, and we hope that our spicy little dumpling doesn't decide to throw any more babies out of her basket.

On Monday night, my little ball of rage was acting weirdly. She was shiftier than usual, and wouldn't eat any of the snacks I offered. I had rearranged her den, so thought she may have just been extra pissy with me, however while monitoring her camera 20minutes later, I quickly realised she was in labour 🫠

Now, I did suspect this feisty beastie was pregnant, however she was too cranky for us to have done our usual pre-pregnancy tests. To have done xrays or ultrasounds on this snappy girl would have required a full general anaesthetic, on top of heavy sedatives to knock her down enough to be able to anaesthetise her. With us not knowing what her heart was like or how far along she was, I instead chose the 'let's see what happens in the next few days' approach.

Cue Monday, and labour. Her first pup sadly was deceased, and I wasn't able to resuscitate her. And boy, did I make an even bigger enemy of Wonton in my efforts. Thankfully, she birthed the other four easily throughout the night, and they all came out squeaking and squirming. Less fortunate was the fact that she wouldn't tend to them at all if I was in eyeshot. I had to resort to monitoring her from the puppy cam, out of fear of her not cleaning them properly as they were born, poised to intervene if she was straining excessively.

Thankfully, everyone is earth side safe and sound, and after a post-labour sedated clip, Wonton is much more comfortable (and less smelly). Luckily the whelping suite has a fab heater, because there's no way this girl will allow a jumper 🙅‍♀️

Now, to convince her that she needs to use the feeding spaces I keep setting up for her, rather than just the blanket on the floor....

This is for all the people who told us that spending $10,000 on a 3 day old puppy was ridiculous.

Did I go into this, thinking we'd be spending that kind of money?

Nope. I was told a few grand, an overnight stay, and then he'd be fine. But of course, neonates have their own timeline. A week in ICU, an animal ambulance ride and another 24hrs in my ICU at home, saw this little boy fully recovered.

He's now 3 weeks old, his eyes are open, and he's a thriving little fluff loaf.

Please meet Toast Malone. I am so looking forward to sharing his rescue journey with you 💜

Discharged 💜

Once again, my dining table is an ICU, and I'm so glad to have this little man with me, safe and sound.

I didn't get to assess this kiddo before admission, as he was surrendered through an emergency vet. I'm very grateful to the care they've given him, but yesterday made the decision to discharge him and transport him home to me via ambulance, as he was 2 steps forward and one step back. He's may need another few days of oxygen therapy, and O can't rationalise $2k a day when I can provide the same care at home, for nothing thanks to providing us with the funds to purchase our amazing neonate equipment.

He's fairly stable and just needs nursing care (oxygen, tube feeding, meds) every few hours, which, thankfully, I'm very practised in.

Let's hope he continues to progress, and I get to pick a ridiculous name and post lots of photos of his floofy b***y 🍑🐶

2025, what's going on? I cannot express in words how much of a cluster you have been so far.

Darkest before the dawn and all that, right? RIGHT?

Frank heard we should have some cash on hand with all this nasty weather about - but this is all the pocket money he has 😬

Luckily he's all set for snacks as we ride out whatever comes over the next few days

(Ithink I caught him mid nibble on a toy he knows is not actually his 🤫)

Owen and I have been doing some thinking today.

You know what blows my mind?

One rescue can have adopters push back on the age of desexing, so they do research, and tailor their adoption desexing agreements to the recommended age according to breed and gender.

Another rescue can have adopters push back on the age of desexing, so they switch to paediatric desexings and don't allow pups to leave entire, to remove the risk of push back.

I'd love thoughts on this. Is there a better way? Sincerely, the person sitting up at 10pm emailing adopters to organise mature desexings as per their contracts.

PS - sure, desexing pups while in care would remove a whole mess of extra work for me, but you won't catch me doing 10-12wk old desexings any time soon.

We had a walk on the waterfront and Pink, Frank and Joey shared a jam doughnut to celebrate. Pinkie the sugar fiend would only have been happier if we'd let her have one to herself 🐷 🎂
