Did you know that cats are masters at hiding ocular pain? 🐱

Glaucoma is a silent thief of sight. By the time symptoms are obvious, permanent damage to the optic nerve has often already occurred. That’s why at Vet Vision, we are bringing proactive, sight-saving screenings directly to our regional communities.

From 1st June to 31st August 2026, we are offering a specialised Feline Glaucoma Screening for just $250 at our Canberra and Newcastle consulting locations.

This comprehensive exam includes an expert specialist check, tonometry, gonioscopy, and an advanced microscopic evaluation. Plus, your cat’s anonymised results will help inform our ongoing Regional Health Study to better understand why certain breeds (like Burmese, Siamese, and Abyssinians) are so vulnerable.

How to book: Because we are a specialist clinic, a referral from your primary care GP vet is required. Speak to your local vet today about scheduling a discounted screening.

This weekend two of our nurses, Nurse Katie and Nurse Sophie, took some time away from eyes to volunteer with Animal Referral Hospital Canberra and Canberra Street Cat Alliance, two organisations we work closely with, to help with a large scale desexing drive. 18 kittens rescue were desexed in under one day, which is a huge accomplishment! This vital work helps more kittens get adopted, and reduces the amount of stray cats being born on the streets.
Of course they couldn't resist checking out some eyes either.

Have you ever seen a lens before? 👁️🐾

This is what an unhealthy lens looks like after removal. A healthy lens should be crystal clear, allowing light to focus sharply onto the retina. In this case, the lens has become cloudy due to cataracts, preventing normal vision.

In routine cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens implanted into the remaining lens capsule. However, in some cases—like this one—the tiny ligaments (called zonules) that hold the lens in place become too weak or unstable to support an implant.

When that happens, we carefully remove the entire lens to prevent it from shifting or floating within the eye, which can lead to further complications.
When a lens is removed, the animal will still have some sight, if the retina functional, they will just have unfocused vision but they will be pain free

Every case is unique, and our goal is always the same: to achieve the best possible outcome and comfort for your pet.
If you have any concerns about your pets vision, please reach out to us at vetvision.com.au

🐾 Happy World Vet Day!
Today, we’re celebrating the incredible work of veterinarians everywhere. We’re taking a moment to shine a light on our founders, Dr. Matt Annear and Dr. Sarah Coall, the newest expert to join our clinical team, Dr. Anne Marx, and our amazing referral vet partners.
Over the past 18 months, Matt and Sarah have worked tirelessly to deliver specialist ophthalmology care to patients across Newcastle, Sydney, the Illawarra, Canberra, and beyond. With the recent addition of specialist Dr. Anne Marx to the team, our mission to expand this vital outreach continues. Together, our vets’ dedication to advancing animal eye care is making a profound difference for patients throughout the region.
Beyond their clinical work, our vets are passionate about uplifting the entire veterinary community. From formal education evenings for over a hundred GP vets, to hands-on mentoring for university students, and supporting charity walks on the weekend, our vets are proud to stand alongside our peers. Together, they’re advancing the standard of ophthalmology care, one lesson and one patient at a time.
This World Vet Day, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to every vet and clinic who has reached out, referred patients, or partnered with us to help preserve pets’ vision, which is our mission.
Together, we’re building a more connected, compassionate veterinary community, one pair of eyes at a time.

Anne is known for her approachable communication style and her commitment to ensuring clients feel informed and supported throughout their pet’s treatment.
Passionate about education, Anne also delivers continuing education lectures and practical training for veterinarians, nurses, and students, with the goal of making ophthalmology accessible and improving first-line care of ophthalmic diseases.
A kind message from Anne to you: “Your pet will do great. Eye exams are gentle — no needles and no unexpected detours involved.”

We were honoured to be a sponsor of and attend the first 'Sophie's Ball' with Sophie's Legacy in Canberra this weekend.
Sophie's Legacy is a wonderful charity that highlights the mental health struggles of people in the veterinary industry and provides access to services for individuals that need help.
Dr Matt, Dr Sarah, Nurse Katie and Nurse Sophie had a great time, dressed in 1920s theme and we will continue to support this charity that is very close to all of our hearts.
