As we head into 2026, many of us will be celebrating watching fireworks, but for our pets, the loud noises and bright flashes can be frightening and overwhelming. 💔🐾

To help keep your pets safe and settled during New Year’s Eve celebrations, here are a few vet-recommended tips:

✨ Keep pets indoors and secure before fireworks begin as frightened pets may try to escape.
🎧 Create a calm space with familiar bedding, toys, and soft background noise (TV or music) to muffle the sound.
🕯️ Close curtains and windows to reduce flashing lights and noise.
🐕 Ensure collars and microchips are up to date in case your pet does get spooked and runs off.
💊 Talk to your vet in advance if your pet experiences severe anxiety, calming aids or medications may help.
💚 Stay calm and reassuring as pets take cues from us, and your relaxed presence can make a big difference.

If your pet becomes extremely distressed or unwell, please don’t hesitate to contact your vet or an emergency clinic.

From all of us at St Ives Vet, we wish you a safe, Happy New Year for both you and your furry family members and we look forward to welcoming you to the clinic in 2026. ✨🐾

🌡️ As temperatures rise, a heat stroke can become life-threatening very quickly for pets, especially dogs. Knowing what to look for can save a life. 🐾

This carousel highlights some of the key warning signs of a heat stroke, including:
• Heavy or excessive panting
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Lethargy or restlessness
• Drooling and changes in gum colour
• Dizziness, confusion, or seizures
• Racing heart
• Collapsing or staggering

If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cool area immediately and seek veterinary attention urgently. A heat stroke is a medical emergency and should never be ignored.

At St Ives Vet, we see firsthand how quickly pets can deteriorate in extreme temperatures. Please avoid exercising pets during the heat of the day, ensure constant access to fresh water and shade, and never leave pets in cars, even for a short time.

📞 If you are concerned about your pet, call us immediately on (02) 9983 9494 or for After Hours Emergency Vet Call (02) 9452 2933.

Your awareness could save a life. 💚

Some pets touch our hearts in the most unforgettable ways and Julie was one of them. 🐾💛

We are deeply moved by Andrew’s beautiful words and incredibly grateful for the trust placed in Dr Sally and the St Ives Vet team during Julie’s most difficult days. Caring for pets through every stage of life is both a privilege and a responsibility we never take lightly.

Our team does everything possible to make each moment comfortable, calm, and filled with love especially when families are navigating the hardest decisions. Knowing that Julie felt safe, cared for, and surrounded by kindness means the world to us.

Thank you, Andrew, for sharing your experience and for allowing us to be part of Julie’s journey. She will always be remembered with warmth and affection. 💚

Keeping Pets Safe in Extreme Temperatures

The heat has ramped up this week, and our pets are feeling it too! 🔥🐾 Extreme temperatures can sneak up quickly, making it harder for dogs and cats to regulate their body temperature, especially brachycephalics (pugs, bulldogs), senior pets, puppies, and thick-coated breeds.

To help keep every furry friend safe, here are a few vet-approved summer safety tips from the St Ives Vet team:

💧 Keep water bowls full: pets can dehydrate much faster in hot weather.
🌤️ Avoid midday walks: stick to early morning or evening when surfaces are cooler on paws.
🏠 Provide shade & airflow: whether inside or out, ensure there’s a cool space they can rest.
🚗 Never leave pets in the car: even for a minute. Inside temperatures can become dangerous in seconds.
❄️ Use cooling mats (pictured) or damp towels: great for quick comfort and reducing heat stress.

If your pet is panting heavily, drooling, vomiting, or seems weak or wobbly, call us immediately as these can be signs of heatstroke and need urgent care. 🩺

Let’s help our pets stay cool, comfortable, and safe as the temperatures soar. 💛
