3 days into my locum at Tennant Creek.
The people in the camps surrounding the town really love their Kunupa (local indigenous word for dog)
3 Parvo cases already (usually sad outcomes), multiple tick infestations, Ehrlichiosis and then there is the ongoing need for desexing the rapidly expanding dog population.
The squeals of delight from the children, as we return surgical patients is heartwarming.
The dogs jump out of the Ute and instantly begin their post-operative hyperactivity.
As we pulled out of the driveway and headed down the road a little voice called out “Thank you for bringing back our puppy”

I'm heading off to remote outback Australia! Having sold my share in Whitehorse Vet Hospital, I am free to seek new opportunities. So when I saw that Barkly Veterinary Practice in Tenant Creek, central NT, was looking for sole-charge vets to staff their remote practice, I thought... "Why Not?"
Tenant Creek has a population of 3000, and is quite centrally located, just 500km from Alice Springs, and 988km from Darwin.
I'll be there for the month of April.
The vet hospital has been operating for the past 10 years to serve the mostly indigenous community, where there is ample opportunity to improve the well-being of the region's pet population and a provide a much-needed community service.
