GDV in Dogs: A Life-Threatening Emergency 🚨

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), often called bloat, is one of the most serious emergencies we see in dogs – and it can become fatal in just hours if not treated.

🐶 What is GDV?

GDV (commonly called bloat) occurs when a dog’s stomach fills with gas, fluid, or food and twists on itself. Once twisted, the gas can’t escape, and blood supply is cut off to the stomach and surrounding organs.

It also puts pressure on the heart and lungs, making it extremely dangerous.

This is not just an upset stomach. GDV is a critical medical emergency that can be fatal in a matter of hours.

It’s most common in large, deep-chested breeds (like Great Danes, German Shepherds, Labradors, and Standard Poodles), but it can happen to any dog, at any age.

⏰ Why is GDV an Emergency?

The stomach twist prevents blood from circulating properly.
It causes rapid shock and tissue damage.
Without immediate surgery, GDV is often fatal.
Minutes matter. If your dog shows symptoms, they need emergency veterinary care right away.

🚩 Signs of GDV to Watch For:

A sudden, bloated or hard abdomen
Unproductive retching (trying to vomit but nothing comes up)
Excessive drooling
Pacing, restlessness, or signs of anxiety
Weakness or collapse
Rapid breathing or panting
Pale gums
If your dog has any of these signs, especially after eating or exercising, don’t wait — this is a true emergency.

📞 What Should You Do?

Seek immediate veterinary attention. GDV can progress within 1–2 hours, and early treatment gives your dog the best chance of survival.

Stay Vigilant!

Your quick action can save a life.

Stay informed, stay prepared, and never hesitate to call us if something doesn’t feel right. 🐾

Rat Bait Poisoning is a Veterinary Emergency!

If your pet has eaten rat bait – don’t wait. Seek veterinary care immediately.

Rat bait (also known as rodenticide) is commonly used in homes and gardens across Australia to manage wild rodents – but it’s extremely toxic to pets. Both dogs and cats are at risk, these baits are designed to taste appealing. Even small amounts can be fatal.

🧪 Why is Rat Bait So Dangerous?

Most rat baits work by preventing blood from clotting, causing internal bleeding. Newer types can also cause seizures, kidney failure, or brain swelling, depending on the active ingredient. And symptoms can take days to appear – by then, it might be too late.

⚠️

Signs of Rat Bait Poisoning May Include:

Pale gums
Lethargy or weakness
Coughing (especially if there’s blood)
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Bleeding from gums, nose, or in urine
Breathing difficulties
Collapse or seizures

Time is critical

If you suspect your pet has eaten rat bait – bring them to the clinic immediately, even if they seem fine. Early treatment can save their life.

🧴

Bring the bait packet with you

There are many different types of rat bait, and knowing the active ingredient helps us choose the right treatment. If possible, bring the packet, photo of the label, or even the name of the product with you to the vet.

🩺 Your quick action could mean the difference between life and death.

If you’re unsure, call us right away – it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Could your pet have eaten rat bait? Here’s what to watch for.

Even small amounts of rat bait can cause serious internal bleeding in dogs and cats, often days after ingestion. Early signs might be subtle, but they can quickly become life threatening.

Common symptoms include:
🔸 Pale gums
🔸 Lethargy or weakness
🔸 Coughing or laboured breathing
🔸 Bleeding from nose or gums
🔸 Vomiting or diarrhoea (with or without blood)
🔸 Bruising or swollen abdomen

If you notice these signs, especially after known or possible bait exposure, seek emergency care immediately.

Fish Hooks & Pets – A Coastal Danger You Need to Know About! 🐟⚠️

Living on the beautiful Sunshine Coast means we’re lucky to have easy access to beaches, rivers, and lakes—but it also means our pets are at increased risk of fish hook injuries.

Whether it’s a swallowed baited hook, hooks embedded in paws, mouth, body or tangled fishing lines, these incidents are unfortunately all too common.

🎣 If your pet gets hooked:

🚫 DO NOT cut the fishing line – The hook can move deeper or change position.

🚫 DO NOT pull the line – This can cause serious damage to the throat, stomach, or intestines.

🚫 DO NOT feed or give water – This could worsen the situation if surgery is needed.

✅ DO bring your pet to the vet clinic IMMEDIATELY.

We’re equipped to sedate safely, take X-rays if needed, scope fish hooks out or got to surgery and remove the hook without causing more harm.

🛑 How to Prevent Fish Hook Injuries:

✔️ Keep pets on a lead around fishing areas

✔️ Never leave baited hooks or fishing tackle unattended

✔️ Dispose of used hooks and lines properly

✔️ Teach kids to fish responsibly around pets

✔️ Be especially cautious during early morning or evening beach walks when anglers are most active

🐾 Fish hooks require prompt veterinary attention. If swallowed, time makes all the difference.

If your pet is ever hooked, don’t wait. Come straight to the clinic. Or call 5445 1333

🐸 Cane Toads – Threat to Our Pets! 🐾

Here on the Sunshine Coast, cane toads are a common and dangerous part of our environment. Every year, our vets at Animal Emergency Service treat countless dogs poisoned by these toxic pests.

🛑 How does poisoning happen?

Dogs often lick or bite cane toads, and in response, the toads release a fast-acting toxin from their skin. This poison is quickly absorbed through the mouth and gums, targeting the heart, gut, and nervous system.

🐶 Signs of Cane Toad Poisoning in Pets:

⚠️ Drooling or foaming at the mouth

⚠️ Red, slimy gums

⚠️ Vomiting

⚠️ Disorientation

⚠️ Muscle tremors or seizures

⚠️ Wobbly walking or collapse

⚠️ Increased heart rate or panting

⚠️ Death (in severe cases)

🐾 Puppies are especially at risk because they love to chase jumping toads. Poisoning is less common in cats, but it can still occur.

🚨 What should you do?

✅ Wipe your pet’s mouth with wet cloth (side to side, (DO NOT USE The hose this can lead to life threatening aspiration) Wipe mouth for minimum 15 minutes.

✅ Keep them cool and calm

✅ Come straight to the vet – don’t wait!

🛡️ Prevention Tips:

✔️ Supervise pets outdoors at night

✔️ Keep your yard toad-free

✔️ Teach dogs to avoid toads using positive reinforcement.

If you suspect your pet has come into contact with a cane toad, seek veterinary care immediately.

🐾 Tick Paralysis Warning 🐾

Tick paralysis is the leading cause of death in companion animals!

Prevention is key!

We’re seeing more tick paralysis cases already this season here on the Sunshine Coast, and it’s a critical reminder of how dangerous these tiny pests can be for our pets.

💀 Paralysis ticks release a toxin that affects the nervous system, causing fatal paralysis in dogs and cats and other pets. Even with treatment - administration of the tick antiserum, sadly, some pets don’t survive – which is why prevention is key!

⚠️ Clinical signs of tick paralysis can include:
• Wobbly or weak back legs
• A change in bark or meow
• Vomiting or retching
• Coughing or gagging
• Difficulty breathing
• Collapse or inability to stand

🕵️‍♀️ What can you do to protect your pet?
✅ Use a trusted tick prevention recommended by your vet (some dog products are toxic to cats).
✅ Perform daily tick checks, especially around the face, neck, chest, and between toes.
✅ Keep your yard tidy to help reduce tick habitats.

🚨 If you notice any of the above signs, or if you find a tick on your pet – seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
The tick antiserum can be life-saving, but it’s not always enough if treatment is delayed. Early intervention gives your pet the best chance at survival.

🐾 Tick season is unpredictable, and one tick is all it takes. Let’s stay vigilant and keep our furry family members safe.

Call 5445 1333 if you’re worried about your pet!

🐾 Bear’s Sock Surprise – A True Tail from the Emergency Room! 🐾
Animal Emergency Service Tanawha

Meet Bear – the sweetest (and cheekiest!) Bernese Mountain Dog puppy you’ll ever meet! 🐶💕

One day, Bear wasn’t quite herself. She was quiet, off her food, and had vomited up… a sock! 😳 But what her loving mum didn’t realise was that Bear had actually swallowed two socks – and the second one was causing big trouble inside her tummy.

Thankfully, Bear’s mum knew something wasn’t right and rushed her straight to the team at Animal Emergency Service Tanawha. A few tests later, we discovered that the second sock had become stuck in Bear’s intestines – and she needed emergency surgery to remove it. 🧦💔

Our dedicated team operated right away and successfully removed the sock. Bear was an absolute trooper through her recovery – and we were so excited to see her wagging her tail again at the Dog’s Day Out in Buderim! 🐾🎉

Bear’s story is a gentle reminder that puppies can (and will!) eat the strangest things. If your pet eats something they shouldn’t – or just isn’t acting like themselves – don’t wait. Seek veterinary attention immediately.

Well done to Bear’s mum for acting so quickly – and big cuddles to Bear for being so brave! 💙🐶
