Cats with sneezing or nasal discharge are often assumed to simply have a kitty cold (“cat flu” or “snuffles”). While this is very common, persistent or worsening symptoms can sometimes point to something far more severe — like a pyothorax.
A pyothorax is a life-threatening condition where pus builds up inside the chest cavity, around the lungs. This makes it difficult for cats to breathe and can make them very unwell very quickly. Signs can be surprisingly subtle at first: nasal discharge, lethargy, reduced appetite, noisy breathing, or hiding away more than usual.
This is why vets may recommend further diagnostics such as X-rays, blood tests, or advanced imaging — not to overcomplicate things, but to make sure we aren’t missing a serious underlying problem.
Thankfully, with early diagnosis and treatment, many cats can recover well 🩺✨
So if your kitty’s “snuffles” aren’t improving, trust your vet when they suggest investigating further. Sometimes it really is more than just a cold. 🐾”
