What could entice us to concentrate through a surgical seminar on a Monday night?! Well, food of course 😂
And after a full day of running after these puppies as well. They got an additional late dinner as well and were happy.
Thank you Dr Daniel from SASH for such informative presentation with lots of useful surgical tips ! 🙏😊

It’s hard work!

How do the puppies know where the milk is?
Born blind and deaf and totally dependent on their mother, they have a secrets weapon - their nose! Sense of smell is already well developed. They can smell their mother and also where to go to latch on to nurse. Both smells activate the puppies and they start crawling like little, cute maggots, and jostle for position. The mother will tap them with her nose if heading away from her. An amazing process to witness firsthand .
And at only two days old the little tails are wagging when latched on and the milk is let down 💕🐩 🥛

Constantly on the job! - the mother dog knows everything by instinct. Pregnancy, labour and now all the responsibilities - feed everybody, check everyone, look after everyone, clean, help, give attention, follow up.
For the first two weeks puppies sleep more then 90% of the time. The mother does everything including cleaning. This tapers off towards four weeks of age when puppies can start on solids, but our mother was still helping to clean.
It’s also normal for the mother to guard her newborns the first week or so, then she relaxes and one can handle the puppies without upsetting her.
There needs to be a constant supply of food for the mother day and night - each time she nurses. The father also has a snack and is getting quite fat! He is an emotional poodle and feels excluded ftom the action. All of that means more food and more rest for him, apparently….

Phase 3: The Circle of Life.
And then there were puppies.

Every single dog you meet was once a puppy, carries, loved and cared for by the canine mother. The amount of effort and energy needed to raise a healthy litter of pups can only be appreciated by watching the process.
Valentina had textbook pregnancy and good prenatal care. And was under constant supervision as the days got closer and gave both on day 63 to 8 healthy puppies. It took 4 hours in labour and the whole litter born over the 2 hours. With 4 boys and 4 girls and subtle colour variations the litter was perfect.
