✨ STAFF SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY ✨

Nurse Natasha.

Natasha is one of our newest graduate nurses across our Berry and Shell Cove clinics. She began her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2023 and fit in so well with the team that she joined us permanently last year after graduating.

Despite being early in her career, Natasha has shown a level of capability and confidence beyond her years. She approaches her role with genuine care, strong clinical awareness, and a clear passion for what she does.

Natasha is a quiet achiever — someone who gets in, gets things done, and does it well.
Nothing is ever too hard, and she consistently approaches her work with a calm, capable attitude. While naturally reserved when she first started, it has been wonderful to see her grow in confidence and find her voice within the team — speaking up when needed and contributing in a way that supports both her colleagues and the clinic.

Before joining us, Natasha worked as a tennis coach and local barista — we’re very glad we managed to steal her away and bring her into the team.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE VET NURSING?
I have always had a love for animals since I was little. It wasn’t until I was older that I realised I could turn that love into a career where I could care for them and help them.

WHAT ANIMALS DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE?
I currently have one dog — a Kelpie named Tiger, who is 2 years old.

AS A NEWER NURSE, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE THINKING OF JOINING THE INDUSTRY?
As long as you have an interest and love for animals, along with a hardworking, “can-do” attitude, there is so much potential in this industry. There is a lot of support to help you learn, and many different pathways you can follow if you want to continue to grow and progress.

IF YOU COULD SWAP BRAINS WITH ANYONE IN THE CLINIC FOR A DAY, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
I would swap brains with Raffy — to get an insight into an animal’s life… and to cause a little chaos.

🐾 October is Pet Wellness Month! 🐾

This month, we are shining a light on preventative care and long-term health to keep our companion animals feeling their absolute best for years to come.

Preventative care isn't just about avoiding illness — it's about understanding what's normal for your pet, recognising when something changes, and taking proactive steps to keep them healthy.

Here are the key pillars to focus on:

🏥 Regular Health Checks: Stay current with routine health examinations and preventative screening, including blood work when appropriate, to help identify potential issues early and ensure your pet is thriving.

🛡️ Preventative Care: Keep up with essential vaccinations and stay consistent with parasite prevention (flea, tick, heartworm and intestinal worms).

🥣 Nutrition & Weight Management: Feed a tailored, balanced diet that supports your pet's age, breed and health status. Keep an eye on portion sizes — maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best ways to support their long-term health!

🎾 Exercise & Mental Enrichment: Daily physical activity paired with brain games and enrichment keeps both minds and bodies sharp.

👵 Senior Pet Care: Older pets need a little extra TLC! Consider six-monthly health checks, routine blood screening, monitoring joint health and mobility, and simple home adjustments to keep them comfortable.

We’re taking a moment to give a huge, well-deserved shoutout to our compassionate, hard-working veterinary nurses.❤️

They are the ones running behind the scenes to make sure your pets are safe, comfortable, and loved. Whether they're soothing a nervous pup during vaccinations, monitoring an anesthetized patient with laser focus, helping vets with multiple different tests, or giving extra snuggles to patients recovering in hospital and more, their dedication never stops.

Their job takes immense skill, physical hard work, and a whole lot of heart and they show up every single day ready to give it their all.

🚨 Your pet doesn’t have to be paralysed to have tick paralysis.

It sounds a little strange given the name, but some of the early signs of tick paralysis can be surprisingly subtle.

Keep an eye (and ear 👂) out for:

• A change in their bark or meow
• Wobbliness or weakness, particularly in the back legs
• Vomiting, gagging or retching
• Difficulty swallowing
• Reluctance to walk, jump or move around normally
• Changes in their breathing
• Or simply seeming a little “not quite right”

Tick paralysis can progress quickly, which is why recognising those early changes is so important.

If you're worried something isn't right, please contact us. We'd much rather you call and talk it through than wait for more obvious signs to develop.

And while ticks are particularly active, keep up the prevention and those regular tick searches. 🐶🐱❤️

🚨 “But they’re on tick prevention…”

It’s something we sometimes hear when a pet arrives at the clinic with tick paralysis — and with lots of paralysis ticks around at the moment, it’s a good reminder to check that everyone’s protection is current.

📅 Quick question: when was your pet’s last tick treatment given?

If you had to check the calendar to answer that one, you’re probably not alone! 😅 Different products have different dosing schedules, so it’s worth making sure you know when the next one is due.

Tick prevention is highly effective when it’s used correctly and kept up to date, and there are now plenty of options to make that easier — including monthly and 3-monthly preventatives, as well as an annual tick prevention injection for dogs.

The best option is the one that suits your pet and is easy for you to keep on top of.

Even with prevention on board, regular tick searches are still important, particularly while tick activity is high.

🚨 TICK ALERT: Protect your pets! 🚨

We have had multiple cases in hospital already!!!

Paralysis ticks are out in full force, and they pose a serious threat to our furry family members. Once a tick attaches, it injects a dangerous neurotoxin that disrupts the connection between nerves and muscles, leading to progressive paralysis.

Watch for these warning signs:

🐾 Wobbly or weak hind legs

🐾 Reluctance to walk or jump

🐾 Changes in their bark or meow

🐾 Difficulty breathing

🐾 Vomiting or retching

What to do if you suspect a tick:

⚡ Seek immediate vet care and keep your pet as calm and cool as possible.

⚠️ Remove the tick carefully. If you're unsure how to do it safely, wait until you arrive at the clinic.

🔬 Save the tick in a container or zip-lock bag so we can identify it for you.

DENTAL AWARENESS MONTH - PREVENTION!

🦷 What’s the best dental prevention plan for your pet? Let’s find out what works best for you and your furry friend! 🐾

From regular checkups to daily habits, here are the top ways to keep those pearly whites healthy:

🩺 Regular Dental Procedures: Professional dental care is an important part of keeping your pet’s teeth healthy. This includes a general anaesthetic, thorough examination, dental X-rays, and a professional scale and polish with us. How often your pet needs a dental procedure will depend on their individual dental health.

🪥 Daily Teeth Brushing: The gold standard for at-home prevention! Use a pet toothbrush or a very soft-bristled brush daily to remove plaque built up from bacteria, food debris and saliva.

⚠️ Pro-Tip: Use flavoured “pet toothpaste” to make it fun. DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE — it isn’t designed to be swallowed by pets and some ingredients can be harmful!

🍩 Dental Diets and Treats: Specially designed dental diets encourage your pet to actually chew, using the size, shape and texture of the biscuit to help wipe away plaque. The same goes for dental treats — their unique shapes and textures help clean your pet’s teeth as they chew.

🦷 DENTAL AWARENESS MONTH 🦷

What is Dental Disease?

It's an inflammatory condition that impacts your pet's teeth, gums, and supporting bone structures. Understanding how it develops is the first step to protecting your best friend!

Here is how it happens in 4 Stages:

✨ 1. Plaque Formation Shortly after eating, a mix of food particles, saliva, and bacteria form a soft, sticky film on your pet's teeth.

🪨 2. Tartar Build-Up If that plaque isn't brushed away, minerals in their saliva harden it into a rough, calcified substance called tartar (or calculus).

⚡ 3. Gingivitis That rough tartar traps even more bacteria, allowing bacteria to accumulate along and below the gum line. This causes red, swollen, and bleeding gums.

Bonus fact: This is the only stage of the disease that is reversible with appropriate treatment and home care!

⚠️ 4. Periodontitis Left untreated, the inflammation progresses deeper, damaging the tissues and bone that support the teeth. This can create painful pockets of bacteria and infection, eventually leading to loose teeth, abscesses and tooth loss.
