On this date, 2 years ago I adopted Deef, a beautiful, gentle, silly, devoted, happy, fun-loving goofball of a greyhound! He came into our lives at just the right time. It had only been 2 weeks since my father had died, it was a very stressful and sad time in my life. Dad passed less than a month after the second anniversary of mums' passing, so my mental health was not great. Deef was a great distraction at that time.

When we first got Deef I admit my opinion of greyhound racing was "on the fence". I wasnt for it but nor was I against it. However, now I am whole heartedly for it! Having Deef has taught my so much about the breed and about racing and just how important it is that they be able to continue doing it!

From about a month after we got him until 2 weeks ago Deef had a girlfriend called Daisy. They became known as the Double D's. Unfortunately Daisy was pts 2 weeks ago after a long battle with arthritis and other medical problems. She was 12 1/2. She taught Deef so much. She definitely helped him to be calm while walking through the centre of Sheffield and wouldnt tolerate any childish antics from him. They loved each other very deeply and I really feel sorry that Deef will never see her again. She was a beautiful soul.

My health has not been good for the past 3 months to the point that I was very worried that I might have to rehome Deef due to now being able to exercise him like he was used to. However his ex trainer has helped me through that and Deef will never leave here. He has adapted to not having a walk everyday really well and is just happy to be with me. He really is one of the most loving dogs i have ever had!

Many thanks to Sharyn and Noel for entrusting him to me, he has literally changed my life - for the better.

We took Deef to Bells Parade at Latrobe this morning. He loved watching all the ducks and sea gulls. We even saw another greyhound the other side of the bridge.
He wanted to go in every direction all at once - silly boy.

Deef had a fantastic time at the beach yesterday. We met up with Daisy and made a new friend, Sage, who is 9. He seems to love the older ladies 🤣. We also caught up with Harpar and Bandit and a few others he hadnt met before. All in all he behaved very well with only a couple incidents where he jumped or barked at "another" breed of dog. But the one person he wouldn't take his eyes off was Catherine! They met late last year when Catherine came to our house to help with focus training and boy did it work! He now expects food from her whenever he see's her!
Deef was also lucky in scoring the leftover icecream that Harpar didnt want to eat. He literally wolfed it down in one go! By the time we left we were all calling him a greyhound on the outside and a labrador on the inside. Deef is extremely food motivated!
Anyway it was a lovely day on the beach and not too many off leash dogs to be worried about. Cant wait for the next group walk.

Today is Deefs' 5th birthday.
After his daily morning walk he was treated to a few slices of frozen zucchini smeared in peanut butter with Leatherwood honey drizzled over the top. He then snoozed in the sun in my bedroom.

I'm so annoyed this morning!
At about 8.45am I took Deef to the Health park that is between the Health centre and the murals here in Sheffield. I regularly take him there as he absolutely loves it! This morning however we were not able to do the full circuit. A family was visiting the park with their young children and their dog - an English setter by the looks which was off lead! The man had the lead over his shoulders and even though they would have seen us they made no effort to leash their dog!

We had to cut our walk/snifari short as I didnt want an altercation between the dogs. I regularly carry a trekking stick with me and if a dog approaches us and will not stay away or be restrained by it's owner and will keep approaching no matter what, I will use that trekking stick to defend Deef and myself!!!!

Deef is reactive to other breeds that are not the same as him so the lack of consideration from these people was really annoying.

If you have a dog, it MUST be on a leash at all times unless you are in a dog park.

On the 30th of September 2023 Sharyn very kindly brought Deef up to us for a meet and greet and possible adoption. He stayed.
That day changed our lives forever!
I admit the first month was stressful and if Sharyn hadnt put us in touch with Lesley Jolly then I doubt we would have Deef now.
Because I had only ever had small spaniels, I had a mindset that was tuned for small dogs and despite spending 6 months doing research on the breed and being a part of greyhound groups on FB I was still very much unprepared for owning one. However things started to change once we met Lesley and her gorgeous greyhound Daisy. I also didnt want to just "give up" and send Deef back.
12 months later and I cant imagine life without him. He has us in stitches every day! I loved my two little cavaliers, they were loving and adorable, BUT, so totally different to a greyhound!
Deef has learnt a lot over this last year but one thing he has taught himself recently is to burry a bone so well that we cant find it! I recently had my backyard landscaped and had a sand pit put in for him, he goes crazy in it, throwing sand all over the place, however when he buries his bone he is so neat about it we literally couldnt find where he had put it! He had the intelligence to dig a deep enough hole, drop the bone in it and then cover it up!
WE adopted Deef 3 weeks after my father passed. Dad was a lover of all animals and would have loved Deef. And I know, that once Deef was accustomed to going to dads nursing home he would loved visiting him too. It's one thing I regret not adopting sooner.
Anyway this is Deefs' first "Gotcha" day, Thank you to Sharyn Marshall and Noel Gibson for allowing me to adopt this gorgeous, happy, intelligent, silly, sooky, loving, num-skull of a dog!
