Bees are such a pilar of our entire ecosystem as a whole. Without bees there is no life ❤️

A new species of native bee with tiny devil-like “horns” has been discovered in Western Australia’s Goldfields, named Megachile (Hackeriapis) lucifer.

The new bee was discovered during surveys of Marianthus aquilonarius, a critically endangered wildflower found only in Western Australia’s Bremer Range, between the towns of Norseman and Hyden.

Lead author Dr Kit Prendergast, an Adjunct Research Fellow at Curtin University’s School of Molecular and Life Sciences, said the female bee’s distinctive horned face inspired the name Lucifer — Latin for “light-bringer,” and a playful nod to its devilish appearance.

“I discovered the species while surveying a rare plant in the Goldfields and noticed this bee visiting both the endangered wildflower and a nearby mallee tree,” Dr Prendergast said.

“The female had these incredible little horns on her face. When writing up the new species description I was watching the Netflix show Lucifer at the time, and the name just fit perfectly. I am also a huge fan of the Netflix character Lucifer so it was a no-brainer."

Congratulations to the Tawny!! We love them here at Keystone.

Although often mistaken for owls, Frogmouths are actually closely related to Nightjars. Nocturnal hunters (feeding mostly on reptiles, rodents, frogs and insects), they enjoy hanging out in big trees, disguising themselves to look like broken branches during the day time.

Whilst widespread across Australia, they are facing growing threats from habitat clearing and some commonly used rodenticides.

So, next time you’re out in your yard, have a close look up and you may just spot one of these beautiful creatures.

After three years placing runner-up, the Tawny Frogmouth has finally claimed the title as the country's 2025 Bird of the Year, earing the adoration (and votes) of bird lovers across the country.

The ever elusive Drop Bear…

The drop bear is a native Australian marsupial related to the koala that is ferocious, savage, cunning and…. entirely fabricated.

While there are several benefits to keeping our pets close at night, there are a few minor risks to consider.
