Not all disabilities are visible.

The Sunflower is a simple way for people with non-visible disabilities to discreetly share that they may need a little extra time, understanding or support in public spaces.

You might see someone wearing a Sunflower lanyard, badge or bracelet, now you know what it means.

Let’s help more people recognise the Sunflower.

Noongar names- Dobitj, Dukayj, Dukitj.
Common names- Dugite, Western Spotted Brown.
Scientific name- Pseudonaja affinis

This dripping Dobitj fell into the pool of a lovely Secret Harbour family.
They were brilliant and handled the situation perfectly!
Kids were inside, and adults had their eyes glued to the snake.
A quick scoop out of the pool with my hook & onto a warm towel to dry off & heat up.

I had a great time talking to the family about snake behaviour 😊
We then played a round of "Snake Statues" with the kids and a toy snake so they know what to do if they ever see a slithery friend again! 💚🐍

Off to the golf course at the end of the street to pop this little one back where it came from.
A little bit scraped up from old injuries & missing the tip of its tail, but nothing too worrying.
Video to follow.

QUICK AS A WHIP.....SNAKE!
But not really.

I thought this release video was going to be much more impressive than it was 😅
I was expecting it to shoot off so I could show you how effortlessly they glide, but instead, it got the last laugh and moved on slowly 😂

Noongar name- Moyoop
Common name- Reticulated whipsnake
Binomial name- Demansia reticulata

❔️⁉️ GUESS THE SNAKE ⁉️❔️

Who am I? 🤔

I am venomous, but not considered to be medically significant to humans (unless you're super unlucky and have a rare reaction.)

I have a big family- I'm one of 15 of my species! 🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍

I'm everywhere...or am I?
I am found in a significant stretch of WA, but not seen much 🫥

I'm very shy 🫣

I am SUPER fast to catch my main diet of lizards! 🦎

Mistaken identity 🥸
Not a Dugite.

This one was found in Secret Harbour.

⚠️🐍 SNAKE SIGHTING 🐍⚠️

The City of Rockingham have notified us of 3 large snakes that have been seen multiple times recently, close to the pathway of the reserve behind the Secret Harbour Golf Club.
Last sighted this morning near the corner of Lorne Bend and Summerville Ave.

I have been down for a look, and can see tracks in the sand where they have moved back into the bush.
As they have been sighted a few times this week, I will head back tomorrow morning to have a look.
Please keep in mind that this is their natural habitat. They belong there.

Disturbingly, I saw a number of different sized dog and cat paw prints also on the sand, on the OTHER
SIDE of the fence and into the bush area. This is NOT OK!
There are multiple signs around that reserve instructing to keep dogs on leads.
Those signs and that fence has been put in place to keep your dogs and our native wildlife safe.

I was very impressed to see that COR have done a fantastic job at creating a strip of clearing between the fence protecting the bushland and the pathway.
This allows for reptiles to come out and bask in the sun, but still be at a distance from the path, and be protected by the fence.
This however, doesn't work if you allow your dogs to push through the fence.

Please don't let the latest sightings deter you from enjoying the area.
Just follow our WALKING WITH WILDLIFE tips so that our native animals, yourselves and your pets can all share the reserve safely

🚶‍♀️🦎🐍 WALKING WITH WILDLIFE 🐍🦎🚶‍♀️

🐍 Make sure your phone is fully charged before you leave the house, and carry it with you.

🐍 Carry your snake bite bandages with you at all times!
Keep them in a bag, or f***y pack by the door, or in your car so you don't forget them. Have them on you before you start your walk.
Snake bite bandages can be purchased through me, or at any pharmacy.

🐍 Wear covered shoes, and long, loose pants.

🐍 KEEP YOUR DOGS ON LEADS!
This will not only ensure your dogs safety, but will keep our native wildlife safe too.

🐍 Enrol your dogs in Snake Avoidance training.

🐍 Stay on the path and walk in the MIDDLE of the path.
Especially in the mornings.
Snakes are ectothermic animals.
They rely on their external environment to regulate their body temperature.
In the mornings, they'll seek out a clear area to warm up in.
This makes pathways & roads very tempting basking spots.
They're often seen on the sides of trails, walking tracks and beach paths, so walk in the middle of the path to avoid giving them a fright.

🐍 Scan the area 2- 3 metres ahead of you as you're walking so you don't accidentally tread on a sunbathing beauty.

🐍 If you DO see a snake, just stop. Stay still and calm to give them time to figure out which way they want to go and let them move on at their own pace.

If it doesn't look like it's going to move, and ONLY IF IT'S SAFE TO DO SO, give it a wide bearth (at least 3 metres) and walk slowly and calmy around it, or better yet, go back the way you came.

🐍 Teach your kids "Snake Statues"
If they see a snake, freeze and call out to an adult.
Tell your children to stay frozen until an adult touches their arm to "unfreeze" them and guide them safely around the snake.

🐍Brush up on your Snake bite First Aid.
Practice at home so that the whole family knows what to do and no one panics if you ever need to use it.

🐍 Nod politely at any snake and thank it for it's service as a volunteer rodent control officer- Ok, this last part isn't necessary....just good manners 😉

Now get out there and enjoy the long awaited sunshine!! 🌞

What a nice surprise to wake up this morning and see that we have 1000 followers 🥰

We only started this page in February, after I came back from maternity leave with our 3rd daughter.
To see the community grow around our passion is such a thrill!

Teaching people how to co exist safetly with our beautiful native wildlife is our goal.
As we humans continue to encroach on their natural habitat, we need a sustainable solution so that we don't eradicate our precious reptiles. Our eco system DEPENDS on them.
Relocating them to smaller and smaller pockets of native bushland, or inefficient "nature corridors" between land developments is becoming more difficult every day.
Misplacing an animal out of its "home range" causes them stress and significantly reduces their chance of survival.

If you contact us about a reptile we don't just rush out, Gung ho, to relocate it. That's not a sustainable practice (although it would be financially beneficial for us 😅)
We'll consult with you and work out a solution that inflicts the least amount of stress on the animal and yourself.
We absolutely WILL relocate an animal if its safety or your safety is at risk, but that's not the be all & end all of the services we provide.

We also assist you to find the closest available relocator whose morals & ethics align with our own, so that you're not waiting an unreasonable time for assistance that you end up being overcharged for.

The first reptile course I ever completed was at Swan Tafe (with the hands- on snake portion being done at Armadale Reptile Centre) in 2003.
I had been volunteering and working with native wildlife previous to that, but not the venomous variety.

For 22 years I've worked with animals in Perth and Far North Queensland, in Zoos, wildlife parks and as a relocator.
I've taken the odd year off here and there when pregnant (it goes against medical advice to play with venomous snakes while pregnant 😉,) but as soon as I was cleared, I'd retrain, re educate and get back out there.

We're not Social media influences that collect the most thrilling and exciting snake catching videos out there for views.
I don't unnecessarily handle any animal for engagement. I just do my job, quickly, quietly and efficiently for the benefit of the animals welfare.
So to see that there's 1000 other like minded people that are interested in learning more about the most misunderstood little creatures out there, with the most undeserved negative reputation, well that just makes us so happy!

Thank you to each and everyone of you for supporting us, and the animals.
We look forward to continuing to learn alongside you.

Love & Hisses from Lani, Chris, Bodhi, Willow, Scarlett and the Scaley crew...including the incredibly handsome Mickey Knox the South-western Carpet Python pictured.

Scarlett, Aiden & I had a wonderful time meeting "The Jewels" social club this morning.

What an honour to be invited to present a snake safety session for such a great group of women! 🦸🏽‍♀️🦸🏽‍♀️🦸🏽‍♀️🦸🏽‍♀️🥰

Scarlett had a blast and babbled her own presentation. We couldn't quite understand her, but I assume it was about her fondness of breastmilk & her dislike of wet nappies 🤷🏽‍♀️

We absolutely LOVE getting out into the community & sharing our passion for snakes. It feels phenomenal helping change minds and teaching people how to live safetly with our very important reptile friends 💚🐍🦎🐢💚

To book a session in for your community group, please call 0433 590 721, or email [email protected].
