⚠️🐍 SNAKE SIGHTING 🐍⚠️
The City of Rockingham have notified us of 3 large snakes that have been seen multiple times recently, close to the pathway of the reserve behind the Secret Harbour Golf Club.
Last sighted this morning near the corner of Lorne Bend and Summerville Ave.
I have been down for a look, and can see tracks in the sand where they have moved back into the bush.
As they have been sighted a few times this week, I will head back tomorrow morning to have a look.
Please keep in mind that this is their natural habitat. They belong there.
Disturbingly, I saw a number of different sized dog and cat paw prints also on the sand, on the OTHER
SIDE of the fence and into the bush area. This is NOT OK!
There are multiple signs around that reserve instructing to keep dogs on leads.
Those signs and that fence has been put in place to keep your dogs and our native wildlife safe.
I was very impressed to see that COR have done a fantastic job at creating a strip of clearing between the fence protecting the bushland and the pathway.
This allows for reptiles to come out and bask in the sun, but still be at a distance from the path, and be protected by the fence.
This however, doesn't work if you allow your dogs to push through the fence.
Please don't let the latest sightings deter you from enjoying the area.
Just follow our WALKING WITH WILDLIFE tips so that our native animals, yourselves and your pets can all share the reserve safely
🚶♀️🦎🐍 WALKING WITH WILDLIFE 🐍🦎🚶♀️
🐍 Make sure your phone is fully charged before you leave the house, and carry it with you.
🐍 Carry your snake bite bandages with you at all times!
Keep them in a bag, or f***y pack by the door, or in your car so you don't forget them. Have them on you before you start your walk.
Snake bite bandages can be purchased through me, or at any pharmacy.
🐍 Wear covered shoes, and long, loose pants.
🐍 KEEP YOUR DOGS ON LEADS!
This will not only ensure your dogs safety, but will keep our native wildlife safe too.
🐍 Enrol your dogs in Snake Avoidance training.
🐍 Stay on the path and walk in the MIDDLE of the path.
Especially in the mornings.
Snakes are ectothermic animals.
They rely on their external environment to regulate their body temperature.
In the mornings, they'll seek out a clear area to warm up in.
This makes pathways & roads very tempting basking spots.
They're often seen on the sides of trails, walking tracks and beach paths, so walk in the middle of the path to avoid giving them a fright.
🐍 Scan the area 2- 3 metres ahead of you as you're walking so you don't accidentally tread on a sunbathing beauty.
🐍 If you DO see a snake, just stop. Stay still and calm to give them time to figure out which way they want to go and let them move on at their own pace.
If it doesn't look like it's going to move, and ONLY IF IT'S SAFE TO DO SO, give it a wide bearth (at least 3 metres) and walk slowly and calmy around it, or better yet, go back the way you came.
🐍 Teach your kids "Snake Statues"
If they see a snake, freeze and call out to an adult.
Tell your children to stay frozen until an adult touches their arm to "unfreeze" them and guide them safely around the snake.
🐍Brush up on your Snake bite First Aid.
Practice at home so that the whole family knows what to do and no one panics if you ever need to use it.
🐍 Nod politely at any snake and thank it for it's service as a volunteer rodent control officer- Ok, this last part isn't necessary....just good manners 😉
Now get out there and enjoy the long awaited sunshine!! 🌞
