Cold mornings can stiffen old joints fast.

If your dog is slower to get up, less keen on walks, or a bit grumpy when touched, winter may be part of it. A warm bed, gentle movement, and a proper check-up can make a real difference.

If you’re not sure whether it’s age, arthritis, or something else, book a home visit and I’ll sort through it with you.

Indoor cats get fleas. Yep — even if they never step outside.

Fleas can hitch a ride in on your socks, your dog, visitors, or stuff coming into the house. I recently treated a strictly-indoor cat in a second-floor unit with fleas — we suspected they came in via woodchip brought in for pot plants. Bravecto sorted him out.

If your cat’s scratching (or you’re seeing flea dirt), don’t wait. Book a home check: https://www.personalisedmobilevet.com.au

If you've got an older cat, this one's worth reading.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the leading causes of death in older cats. Most vets know it. What's less known is why cats get it so much more than other mammals — and why a research team in Tokyo thinks they may have found a way to change that.

In most mammals, a protein called AIM activates during kidney stress to clear cellular debris from the kidney tubules. In cats, AIM gets stuck — it binds to another protein and never activates properly. The debris accumulates. That's a direct contributor to how CKD progresses.

Dr Toru Miyazaki developed a lab-synthesised version of the AIM protein, given by IV injection, that bypasses this problem and restores the clearance function.

A study published in The Veterinary Journal earlier this year followed 21 Stage 3 CKD cats treated with recombinant AIM. Survival at 360 days went from roughly 20% to around 80%. It's a small exploratory study — so treat the numbers carefully — but meaningful enough to take seriously.

Clinical trials are running at 26 vet hospitals in Japan, and a regulatory application was filed there in April 2026. Not approved anywhere yet. Australia would need its own APVMA process, so this isn't coming to a clinic near you any time soon.

But it's worth knowing about. I keep a close eye on emerging research — if something significant is on the horizon, I'd rather understand it properly before it arrives than catch up afterwards.

Sick days for when your pet is sick. Italy just made it happen.

Italy has formally recognised sick pets as a valid reason for paid emergency leave. Up to 3 days per year, with a vet certificate confirming urgent care needed. The pet must be registered and microchipped. Codified into law in 2026, building on a landmark court ruling from 2017. One of the first countries in the world to do it.

As a vet who does home visits, I see this from a specific angle.

When a pet is seriously ill, people don't leave them. They cancel meetings, call in sick with excuses that aren't really excuses, sit on the floor next to them and wait. They do what any person who loves someone would do. They stay.

The problem is they have to hide it. Because "my dog is sick" doesn't carry the same weight as "I'm sick" — even when the grief and the worry feel identical.

Italy has basically said: we see that. And we think it counts.

There's a microchip requirement, which makes sense. A vet certificate for urgent care, also reasonable. It's not a blanket "call in anytime your cat sneezes" policy. It's recognition that a genuine pet health emergency is a genuine reason to not be at work.

Should Australia be next?

Some pets just don't do clinics.

Fair enough. Some need a lounge room, a bit of time, and someone who doesn’t act like they’re parked in a loading zone.

That’s the whole point of PMV. Calm care for the anxious, the elderly, the stubborn, and the ones who simply prefer their own sofa.

If clinic visits are a struggle, send us a message. We’ll talk it through.

Bandage thief on the loose—again. If you think your dog is cheeky, try running a mobile vet service in their living room. Turns out, the only thing faster than my schedule falling apart is a small dog with a roll of bandage and a mission.

Did you know? Dogs can recognise over 250 words. Mine just ignores ‘stop’ and ‘come back’.

If you want honest, patient care (and maybe a laugh), book a home visit. You might even get your bandages back.

Quick one for anyone with RSPCA Pet Insurance.

If you're booked in with me, I can lodge your insurance claim on the spot during the visit. No waiting until you get home, no paperwork to track down later. You just tell me you're covered, I submit it right then and there, and depending on what your policy covers and what the insurer approves, you may only need to pay the gap on the day.

I want to be clear — I'm not recommending any insurance product, and fast approval isn't guaranteed. Every claim is assessed by the insurer based on your individual cover. But if you've already got RSPCA Pet Insurance and you're coming to see me, it's worth knowing this option exists so you can plan accordingly.

If you're not sure whether your cover applies to a home visit consultation, best to check with RSPCA Pet Insurance before your appointment. Happy to answer any questions in the comments.
