In Loving Memory of Levendi
08 September 2014 โ 18 October 2025
It is with profound heartbreak that we announce the passing of our beloved stallion Levendi. A horse who changed our lives, shaped our farm and gave us more joy than we ever imagined, Levendi was far more than a champion. He was family. He was part of the Magnum Park family.
On the 18th of October, after bravely recovering from his first colic surgery, Levendi was struck by a sudden and severe second bout. Despite immediate intervention and tireless efforts from an extraordinary team, led by Mark Buckerfield and the Hobart Equine Practice team, in conjunction with Merrilyn Fitzgerald and the Meander Valley Equine Hospital team, and our own Magnum Park team who stood shoulder to shoulder with the boy and the vets around the clock, his condition deteriorated rapidly and this time he never pulled through.
Levendi was surrounded by people who adored him and he was given every possible chance. In the end, when nothing more could be done, and with love and dignity, we made the heartbreaking decision to let him go peacefully. He deserved nothing less. It was the hardest decision we have ever faced, but Levendi gave his all until the very end, just as he did as a racehorse on the track.
He came to us a champion, but he leaves us as something even greater.
Levendi announced himself from the very beginning with a blistering 2YO debut win at Ballarat. He stamped his class with a Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes win on Derby Day at Flemington, before reaching his peak performances that showcased his grit and determination. He achieved what only nine horses in history have done, winning the rare big 3YO Derby Double. First the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes over 2000 metres, then sealing his place in racing history with a brilliant victory in the Group 1 ATC Australian Derby, running the quickest time in the past twenty five years.
He raced with courage, heart and an unmistakable will to win. The same qualities he carried through every day of his life.
But the real story, the part that hurts, the part that matters most, is who he was behind the headlines and what he stood for as a stallion.
A stallion who trusted us.
A horse who healed with us.
A companion who stood through the darkest chapters and brought hope into the light.
He was woven into our days, our routines, our plans and our dreams. To care for him was a privilege. To love him was effortless. He had a presence that made you slow down, look at him and simply appreciate the gift of having a horse like him in your life.
His loss is shattering.
There is an ache in every paddock.
A silence in every routine.
A sadness that he will not run to the fence to show off.
A weight in every sunrise, where he should be looking over the fence, waiting to greet us.
His charisma and charm, which we had grown to know and love, are gone.
And yet, even in grief, we carry pride. His legacy lives on in his foals, who already show his temperament, his strength, his stride and his spark. His story is not ending here. His story continues through his progeny and through everyone who loved him and believed in him.
To everyone at Peter Gelagotis Racing and the Gelagotis family, thank you for entrusting us with your boy. Caring for Levendi and giving him a home where he was cherished every day has been one of the greatest honours of our lives and a privilege we will remember forever.
To our Magnum Park team, thank you for loving him unconditionally and fighting for him. You loved him, you worked with him, you fought for him and you stood beside him with unwavering dedication. This loss will be felt by all of us as a team and we feel this sadness together, losing our great stallion. Not only for the farm and the future, but for the whole Tasmanian industry.
And to everyone who has reached out with love, thank you for your messages, your memories and your compassion. You have carried us in ways you may not realise and helped us through this unimaginable and heartbreaking time.
Levendi was more than a stallion.
He was a chapter of our lives.
He was the heartbeat of Magnum Park.
He was loved beyond measure.
Rest peacefully, beautiful boy.
You gave us everything.
We will carry you with us always.
Rest in peace, champion. It is time for your offspring to shine bright. Thank you for the memories, Levendi. There are plenty. We will remember you fondly and forever. Forever in our hearts.
