Queanbeyan & District Dog Training Club

Queanbeyan & District Dog Training Club To promote responsible dog ownership. Learn how to socialize your dog with other dogs and learn obedience.

We provide obedience training for Queanbeyan, Queanbeyan District and Canberra region. We are a not-for-profit organisation which is supported entirely by our volunteers. Our primary aim is to promote responsible dog ownership in and around the Queanbeyan District. This includes teaching handlers the basics of dog obedience training by using positive motivation methods. The club meets at the Hoover Road grounds in Queanbeyan on Sunday mornings during NSW school terms.

🐾 We want to know… what’s your dog’s favourite way to use their brain? 🧠

Science tells us that adult brains, human AND dog, stay sharp through active, rewarding challenges. Researchers Lillard and Erisir found that paying attention and being motivated by reward are the key ingredients for real, lasting learning at any age. In other words, a dog who’s having fun and engaged is a dog whose brain is genuinely growing. 🧠

As we head into the second half of the term, we’d love to celebrate all the ways our QDDTC dogs stay switched on outside of class.

Does your dog go wild for a sniff walk? 👃Lose their mind over a new trick? Become a completely different dog when you pull out the puzzle feeder?

👇📸Drop a comment (and a photo if you have one!) telling your dog’s favourite enrichment activity?

Defrosting after this mornings class! 🥶🐾

Massive shout-out to everyone who braved the freezing cold morning for their dogs today. Whether your pup was locked into training or just practicing watching the world go by, there were happy, wagging tails everywhere. That level of consistency in this weather is unmatched!

Go get warm and treat those good dogs! ☕🧣

Sunday morning training in winter = frosty fingers, steamy breath, and the age-old question: does my dog need a coat? ❄️ 🐾

The answer depends on your dog!

❌ Probably doesn't need one: double-coated and Nordic breeds (Huskies, Malamutes, Border Collies, Aussie Shepherds) - built for the cold, and extra layers can actually cause overheating.

✅ Likely needs one: small breeds, short-coated dogs (Staffies, Boxers, Whippets, Dalmatians), and lean breeds like Greyhounds. If they're shivering, that's a real signal.

✅ Worth considering: puppies, senior dogs, and any dog with low body fat.

See you Sunday! 🐶

🟡 Seen a dog in a yellow bandana, vest or leash? Here’s what it’s telling you. 👇

A dog wearing yellow needs a little extra space, so it’s asking that you don’t approach it or its handler. 🛑

Dogs may need space for many reasons. It could be
😟 feeling nervous or anxious
🧓 older or less tolerant of interaction
🤓 undergoing training
🤒 recovering from illness or surgery
🏡 adjusting to a new home or rehabilitation.

For both dogs and their owners, unexpected approaches can be stressful. A dog who is already anxious or recovering may react unpredictably when approached, and owners can feel pressured or worried about keeping their pet (and others) safe.

By simply giving these dogs space, you’re helping reduce stress, supporting their progress, and keeping everyone safer. 💛

And even if a dog isn’t wearing yellow, always check with its handler before approaching. 👋 A quick ‘Is it okay to say hello?’ helps keep everyone safe and happy.

WHO RUNS QDDTC?

We often talk about "the committee" like it’s a permanent fixture, but it’s actually just regular members who step up for a season to keep the club running smoothly.

Come August AGM, every single committee role becomes vacant. While some of our team are happy to stand again, others are ready for a well-deserved break to focus on training their own dogs.

Because every position opens up, we’ll be sharing a clear look at what these roles involve over the next few weeks. If you’re ready to put your hand up and get involved, we will ensure you have all the backing and support you need to succeed. Stay tuned! 👇
