Peacocks and Peahens

Our hobby farm is home to some truly spectacular residents – our peacocks and pea hens! 🦚 While chickens may rule the roost here at Lavender Hens Hobby Farm, these beautiful birds always steal the spotlight when they strut around the paddock.

Here are a few interesting facts about these fascinating birds:

🦚 Only the males have the famous feathers
The stunning, colourful fan of feathers belongs to the male peacock. When he spreads his tail into a giant display, it can reach over 1.5 metres wide! The females, called pea hens, have much more subtle brown and green colouring which helps them stay camouflaged when nesting.

🦚 Those “eyes” have a purpose
The beautiful eye-shaped patterns on a peacock’s tail feathers are called ocelli. The more vibrant and symmetrical the display, the more attractive the male appears to potential mates.

🦚 Peacocks don’t always keep those feathers
Each year, usually at the end of summer, male peacocks naturally shed their long tail feathers. Over the following months they grow back again ready for the next breeding season’s impressive displays.

🦚 They love to show off
When a peacock spots a pea hen nearby, he will fan out his feathers, shake them so they shimmer in the sunlight, and strut proudly to catch her attention. It’s nature’s version of a dance performance!

🦚 They can actually fly
Even though they’re large birds, peafowl can fly short distances and often prefer to roost up high in trees or on sheds at night for safety.

Our peacocks and pea hens are always a favourite with the family and visitors. There’s something magical about seeing a peacock fan his feathers in the sunshine while the chickens wander past like it’s just another normal day on the farm.

Nature never fails to amaze us here at Lavender Hens! 💜

Good morning George!

5 interesting Alpaca facts

Alpacas are one of the most charming and fascinating animals you’ll ever meet on a hobby farm. With their fluffy fleece, gentle nature and curious personalities, it’s easy to see why so many people fall in love with them. At Lavender Hens Hobby Farm we’re big fans of these quirky creatures, so we thought we’d share a few interesting facts you might not know about them!

🦙 1. Alpacas hum to communicate
Alpacas are surprisingly chatty animals, but instead of loud noises they mostly communicate by humming. Each hum can mean something different — curiosity, contentment, worry, or even calling out to their cria (baby alpaca). Spend a little time around them and you’ll start to recognise the different sounds.

🦙 2. Their fleece is incredibly valuable
Alpaca fleece is one of the softest and warmest natural fibres in the world. It’s often compared to cashmere and is naturally hypoallergenic because it contains very little lanolin. Alpacas are usually shorn once a year, and their fleece can be used for clothing, blankets and yarn.

🦙 3. They are very gentle on the land
Unlike many grazing animals, alpacas have soft padded feet instead of hard hooves. This means they cause very little damage to pasture and soil. They’re also efficient eaters and tend to graze in a way that helps maintain healthy grass.

🦙 4. Alpacas have a built-in social structure
Alpacas are herd animals and thrive when they’re with others. They have a natural “pecking order” within their herd, but it’s usually quite peaceful. Watching them interact can be quite entertaining as they establish their place in the group.

🦙 5. Yes… they can spit!
One of the most well-known alpaca facts is that they can spit — but it’s usually reserved for other alpacas rather than people. They use it mainly to establish boundaries or during feeding time if another alpaca gets a little too close to their food!

These gentle, curious animals bring so much personality to a farm and are a joy to watch. If you’ve ever had the chance to spend time with alpacas, you’ll know just how special they are.

Do you have alpacas on your property, or would you love to have them one day? Let us know in the comments or share some pics!🦙

🌈🥄 Colour lovers, this one’s for you… 🥄🌈

We took this photo under white lights inside the house so you can see the true colours of our new feed scoops — and honestly, we can’t get enough of them 😍 The colours are even more gorgeous in person and bring a little bit of joy to our everyday feeding routine.

We absolutely love our new scoops and would happily collect the entire colour range over time 🌈💜 It’s the small things that make farm life feel extra special.

We’re also really impressed with how sturdy they feel — the plastic is nice and thick, so we’re expecting them to be durable and long-lasting, even with daily use around the farm 🐔🌾

Practical, colourful, and farm-approved ✔️

Keeping Chooks Cool During Hot Weather ☀️🐔

Why it matters and how to help your flock beat the heat

Hot weather can be extremely stressful for chickens. Unlike humans, chooks don’t sweat, which means they rely on us to help them stay cool and avoid heat stress. Prolonged high temperatures can quickly impact their health, egg production, and in severe cases, can be fatal.

Why Keeping Chickens Cool Is So Important

When chickens overheat, they may pant, hold their wings away from their bodies, become lethargic, or stop eating and laying altogether. Heat stress can also weaken their immune system, making them more susceptible to illness. During extreme heat, young birds, heavy breeds, and older hens are particularly at risk.

Helpful Tips to Keep Your Chooks Cool

• Provide plenty of shade – Natural trees, shade cloth, or covered runs help protect birds from direct sun.
• Fresh, cool water at all times – Change water regularly and add extra drinkers around the coop and run.
• Freeze treats – Frozen watermelon, corn, or berries are a great way to help birds cool down.
• Improve airflow – Ensure coops are well-ventilated and never sealed up during hot days.
• Use shallow water trays – Some chickens enjoy standing in cool water to lower their body temperature.
• Avoid handling during peak heat – Reduce stress by limiting interaction in the hottest part of the day.

Final Thoughts

A little preparation goes a long way in keeping your flock safe, comfortable, and productive during hot weather. By providing shade, hydration, and cooling options, you’ll help your chooks stay happy and healthy all summer long.

Adding New Chickens to an Existing Flock 🐔

Bringing new chickens home is exciting, but introducing them to an established flock needs a little planning to keep everyone safe and happy.

Pros:
Adding new chooks can boost egg production, balance flock numbers, and freshen up your genetics. It’s also a great way to replace older hens or expand your flock with new breeds.

Cons:
Chickens have a strict pecking order, and new birds can be picked on. Stress, bullying, or even injury can occur if introductions are rushed.

Helpful Hints:
• Always quarantine new birds for 2–4 weeks to prevent disease.
• Introduce slowly — using a “see but don’t touch” setup works well.
• Add new chickens at night when the flock is calm.
• Provide multiple feeders and waterers to reduce competition.
• Expect some squabbles — this is normal while the pecking order settles.
• Avoid adding a single bird; pairs or small groups integrate better.

With patience and the right approach, most flocks settle beautifully and live together happily.
