If you have a dog with recurrent skin or ear problems, there’s a chance that their issues may temporarily improve over the winter months only to pop back up again in spring. 🐶

This is because atopy (environmental allergies) is a very common cause of recurrent skin and ear disease in dogs. If your dog has atopy that is triggered by a spring-summer-autumn pollen type, you may notice a temporary improvement in their symptoms when the weather cools down.

For personalised advice on the effective management of skin or ear allergy symptoms in your pet, consult our knowledgeable team. 🌿

Just like us, our canine companions can be at risk of gaining a few unhealthy kilograms during the winter months. 🍗🍔🥤

Whilst wanting to stay warm indoors and eat snacks is a totally understandable urge, an expanding waistline is not good for your pet’s general health. Unfortunately, being overweight can put dogs at a higher risk of joint injuries, breathing issues, urinary problems and certain types of cancer, among other issues.

For help assessing your pet’s body condition or some professional tips for keeping them at their healthiest weight, consult our health-conscious veterinary team. 🐕

Did you know that pets can develop an odd condition called pica? 🤔

Pica is the compulsive eating of non-food items. This can occur due to nutritional deficiencies, underlying medical conditions, or behavioural issues such as anxiety or boredom. Additionally, some pets appear to do it just as a strange habit (we’re looking at you, Burmese cats!)

In cats, common pica items include wool (e.g. blankets or yarn), elastic bands, and plastic, all of which can potentially cause dangerous gastrointestinal obstructions. ⚠️

If you ever suspect that your cat is nibbling on silly things, it’s a good idea to consult our feline-friendly team promptly for further advice.

🥳 Edit: Power restored 🥳

❌ Unplanned power outage ❌

It seems a tree has had a run in with some powerlines which means we have regrettably lost power at the clinic so no phones or computers. The phone line should still ring through and divert to a backup number.
Please be patient with our staff while we try to get this issue sorted. We will update you once we have power restored.

Sorry for the inconvenience, definitely not what we had planned for our sunny Saturday.

Pic for attention: Don’t worry, Littlefoot will not be doing the electrical works here today, he’s just here for his looks

In cold weather, even cats who normally spend their days outdoors may prefer to stay bunkered down indoors! 🐾

For this reason, it’s especially important to ensure that you’re offering indoor toileting facilities that are amenable to your cat (or else they may find their own!).

In general, it’s recommended to have one litter tray per cat in the household, plus one extra. Ensure trays are scooped daily to remove solids and that they are completely cleaned out at least once a week (or more frequently if non-clumping litter is being used).

Before you break out the essential oil burner to promote that hygge vibe in your house this winter, it’s a good idea to perform a safety check for your feline companion. 🕯️

Skin exposure to or the ingestion of some common oils can be poisonous to your cat, including tea tree, eucalyptus, clove, pine, ylang ylang, citrus (limonene) and peppermint.

Symptoms of toxicity may include drooling, tummy upset, tremors, breathing difficulties or collapse. If you suspect a toxicity in your pet, it’s recommended to consult our vets or the Animal Poisons Helpline immediately. 📞

Winter is here, but so too are those pesky fleas! 🐱

Whilst flea eggs will remain dormant outdoors during cold weather, they can still hatch in the toasty indoor conditions of our homes. Adult flea bites will cause itchy skin lesions in your pet, which may require veterinary treatment to settle. Additionally, infestations of fleas can be difficult to eradicate from your house. 🔍

It’s therefore best to continue your pet’s flea prevention year-round. Ask our helpful team for personalised recommendations on safe and effective parasite control options for your pet.

While our canine companions have furry coats, it’s important to remember that many breeds will still feel the cold during winter. 🐶

Unless your pet is an Arctic breed or similarly thick-coated, they will require a padded jacket at night or when outdoors during cold weather.

Every outdoor dog should also have access to a dry sleeping spot that is protected against draughts, with some warm, soft bedding that they can snuggle down into. 🛏️

Did you know that colder weather can affect your dog’s tail? 🐾

“Limber tail” (a.k.a. acute caudal myopathy) is a condition where dogs develop sudden pain around the base of their tail, leading to several days of discomfort and abnormal tail positioning.

This issue most commonly occurs in active large breed dogs, particularly those who have been swimming or playing vigorously outdoors in cold weather within the previous 24 hours.

Should you notice any discomfort in your pet during chilly weather, we’d advise hot-footing it to our clinic for a prompt veterinary assessment! ❄️

Did you know dogs can develop cognitive decline similar to dementia in humans? 🧠 Signs include disorientation, changed sleep patterns, forgetting training, or altered interactions with family.

Supporting brain health involves mental stimulation, medication and consistent routines. Special diets containing antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can also benefit brain function.

As dogs age, their nutritional needs change. 🍽️

Senior dogs typically need fewer calories but higher quality protein to maintain muscle mass. They may benefit from added joint supplements like glucosamine and omega-3 fatty acids. 🐾 Dogs with specific health conditions like kidney disease, heart disease or diabetes often require specific diets.

Not sure what to feed your senior dog? Our team can provide tailored dietary recommendations based on their specific health needs. 🥩
