🌿RHYTHM🌿

Dressage doesn’t start with collection or perfection—it starts with the first building block of the training scale: RHYTHM. That steady, consistent, and unhurried beat is the foundation of everything we build with our horses. Rhythm teaches us patience. It reminds us to move in harmony with our horse, not ahead of them.

Whether you're riding a green horse or schooling higher movements, always come back to this question: Can we move with balance, relaxation, and clarity in the rhythm that suits this horse? This is where real training begins—and where true partnership forms.

🐎 Why rhythm matters:
Rhythm is the consistent tempo and regularity of the footfalls. It builds relaxation, balance, and flow in every ride. According to the FEI, "The rhythm should also be maintained through the transitions within a pace and in all turns, also in the corners, as well as on straight lines. No exercise can be good if the horse is losing rhythm. A loss of rhythm is often a sign of incorrect training".

💡 Know your beats:
• Walk = 4-beat
• Trot = 2-beat
• Canter = 3-beat
Your horse's rhythm must stay regular and unforced.

⚖️ What rhythm feels like:
A natural, swinging movement where the horse feels connected, not hurried or held.

🧘‍♀️ Your job as a rider:
• Rein in tension
• Feel your horse’s tempo
• Follow, support, and maintain the rhythm
This is the beginning of a true connection.

✨ Rein & Rise is about more than riding. It’s about partnership. Contact us to discuss your training needs.

It starts from the ground up — literally.

At Rein & Rise, our training isn’t just about riding. It’s rooted in the classical Dressage Training Scale — rhythm, relaxation, connection, impulsion, straightness, collection — and that foundation begins with clear, balanced work on the ground.

Groundwork allows us to:
• Respect each horse’s unique nature and ability
• Address their physical and behavioural needs
• Build strength and softness through gymnastic, mindful movement
• Establish trust, rhythm, and relaxation before we ever get in the saddle

We don’t only train with a formula — we train the individual. Our goal is a confident, willing horse, developed through appropriate, foundational and ethical training; and a rider with balance, feel, and understanding.

It’s horse-first, always.

And, it’s about inner and outer balance — for both horse and rider.

Why Strength Matters — From the Ground Up 💪🐴

Before we think about shape, frame, or movement under saddle, we need to focus on strength—true, functional strength that starts with the basics.

Through fundamental groundwork, we teach the horse how to lift through the core, engage the hindquarters, and carry themselves with balance and power. This isn't just about aesthetics—it’s about protecting joints, building correct muscle, and setting your horse up for long-term soundness.

When we encourage the horse to lift their tummy and step actively from behind, we’re creating the building blocks for healthy movement under saddle. Even a few minutes of consistent groundwork can improve posture, condition, and confidence.

💡 It’s not about doing more—it’s about doing what matters, with feel and intention.

Strong foundations build strong horses.

Let it begin from the ground.

You might assume “Rein & Rise” is all about riding—reins in hand, rising trot and all. And yes, those are familiar terms for riders, trainers, breeders, and horse lovers alike. But the meaning behind Rein & Rise goes much deeper.

It reflects a core philosophy that underpins everything I do.

Rein in the ego. Rein in the expectations. Rein in the frustration.
Then—Rise. Rise above it. Rise to become the rider, trainer, coach, and horseperson you want to be; that your horse needs you rot be.

Every interaction with your horse is a chance to grow - together. Prioritise their health, their happiness, and their ability to learn. Be flexible. Adjust the plan. Some days will flow, others will challenge you. Learn to recognise when your horse needs connection, trust, and softness. And when they’re ready to focus and push forward.

Ask questions. Be curious. Reflect. Trust your gut. And know that sometimes, a step back is part of the path forward.

isn’t about racing to the top. It’s about working through the training scale with patience and purpose. It’s not about being the best - it’s about helping your horse become their best. (Thanks to for that wisdom.)
