the Dog Menu
I got my inspiration from 2 main sources
One was our local vet who gave us a list and basic diet to follow
The other came from a book Vegetarian Dogs www.vegetariandogs.com
But in the end I adapted and made my own way
This may sound a little hard to do at first but I assure your dog will love
You for it
Ok this is broken down into a few different components
First the Vitamins
I make my own mix now but you could use a store bought one that is veggie
Based
This would last my 3 dogs probably more than a year it just happens to be
The way I find the basic ingredients
This is the basic recipe for the vita mix
6 cups powdered Kelp
1 Cup Calcium Carbonate (this can come from bone source be sure to check)
2 Cup Brewers Yeast or nutritional yeast
1 cup powdered spirulina
1/2 cup Celery powder
1/2 cup dried powdered Garlic
2-3 cups of crushed or powdered Linseed (flax-seed)
2-3 cups soy bean meal or soy flour
approx 1 level tablespoon in each meal
Next the veggie mix
I make about 3-6 day supply every time I do this so it makes it a bit easier when serving
The veggies are roughly divided into 2 halves the green leafy & the hard
Root like you can use all the parts of the veggies that normally get put
In compost heap like the leaves from cauliflower or the potato peals etc etc…
They are served raw
I use a food processor to make the job easy and get the veggies from course to fine size
So green leafy could go like this
Turnip tops
Broccoli stems (and flowers if ya like)
Kale
Celery
Beet tops
Kohl Rabi tops
Zucchini
Etc etc...
The roots can go like
Carrots
Potatoes
Sweet potatoes
Butternut Pumpkin
Pumpkin
Beets
Kohl Rabi
Swedes
Well you get the idea
Now by weight make the mix 50/50 (doesn't have to be exact)
Then I pack it into air tight containers for the fridge the veggie mix makes
Up to 50% of what my dogs eat I usually make a 3-5 day supply at a time
Next the main course
Now the other half of their meal varies a bit (cause they need a bit of
Variety too)
Ingredients to have on hand
I use Organic Pasta,
Organic non gmo Tvp, (high protein)
Lentils both brown & red, Soy, navy, pinto, black eyed, mung beans, chick peas the more variety the better (high protein)
Split peas,
Brown & white Rice
Barley (high protein)
Millet (protein and calcium)
Linseed
Poppy seed
Dried garlic (helps with intestinal worms)
ok receipt 1
8 cups of Beans in total
Try to make about a third to half lentils
4 cups total Brown Rice and or Barley
2 cups whole millet
1 cup Crushed Linseed (flax-seed)
1 cup poppy Seed
3 Tbsp of dried Garlic
6 cups of the above veggie mix sometimes I use older veggies for cooking and the fresh for the raw
Mix all together in big pot bring to boil (don’t over cook)
Bring to a boil it can be a little soupy use the white rice to make it firm
If you are using white rice add at the end not at the beginning
(this can be frozen for a short term so I often make a big batch freeze
about 2/3rd of it and bring out as needed over the next few days I usually make a 2 week batch )
just soak (sprout) the beans at least 36 hours I like to soak for 48 hours before cooking the beans
You may need to change the water at 24 hours
Separate soak brown rice and barley for 12 hours min
Add split peas and or red lentils dry
add all the other ingredients
bring to a boil and allow to simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the veggies and beans are cooked add white rice to make up the soupy nature
allow to sit the white rice should absorb the excess water refrigerate or freeze when cool.
When serving
mix this lot 50/50 with the veggie mix adding one tablespoon of vita mix and serve
I also add a handful of vegan pet
you can figure out how much to give with trial and error
I sometimes add molasses to sweeten it up for them or a little garlic olive oil to make savory
So to sum it all up
1 part bean stew
1 part raw veggie
1 teaspoon vita mix (or what ever commercial brand suggests)
Extras to add to above meal
1 handful VEGAN dog food I use Vegan pet from PAWS
2 tablespoons dry TVP
some uncooked tofu or maybe a veggie sausage
If you use your leftovers just make sure the get the first 3 items too
Sometimes 10-15 peanuts or almonds
Seitan
Anyway once you get going it usually takes just a few minutes to feed your dog
We feed once a day in evening and give them several biscuits in the morning
Never leave food out make them finish and then remove bowl this creates great eating habits
receipt 2
olive oil in a pan with about 3 tbsp of fresh garlic cook the garlic for a minute or two
add the 3 cups of TVP (already pre-soaked for 30 minutes)
about 1 kilo of tomatoes chopped
add 3-4 cups of Veggie mix
cook for about 3-5 minutes
mix this 50/50 with the raw veggie mix and serve
(this is closer to raw if not over cooked)
receipt 3
boil 1/2 kilo of pasta, mix 3 cups of veggie, mix 1 cup of crushed linseed
some tofu and veggie sausage
just barely cook the pasta maybe 2-3 minutes after it boils
don't use too much water
mix this 50/50 with the veggie mix
now all of that is their basic dinner
I know it sounds a bit hard at first but it really is easy
mix it up and try variations keeping in mind not to use onions
Onions are toxic to dogs
I also make the dogs their own biscuits and let me tell you they love them
I tried them out on the neighbours dogs and they love them as well
This is a little harder but equally worth it
Here is my basic receipt
6 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup Vitamin mix
1 cup crushed linseed
1 cup psyllium Husks
1 cup oat bran
1 cup wheat bran
1/2 cup each of raw pepitas (pumpkin seeds)
Millet, flaked almonds, sesame seeds, sunflower, poppy seeds
Make sure all the seeds are raw no salt
4 cups rolled oats (I usually buy rolled oats, Rolled barley, Rolled wheat
Mix it all together and use that)
1 cup almond meal
4 cups Veggie Mix
1/4 cup peanut oil
Add about 6-8 cups of water mix together and make the mix workable dough
If it is too sticky add more flour
If it is too dry add more water
Roll this mixture out about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick cut into shapes or squares
Place on pans
(You may need to put a little bit of flour on the pan to keep them from
Sticking)
Put in the oven at 350 F (200 C) for 10-15 minutes or until kinda crispy
Around the edges
Leave in the oven over night so the get harder they need to be crunchy
If they are too moist they will mold like bread so cooking additional time at
Lower temps can
Remove the excess moisture
And serve away
