✨THOMPSON & REDWOOD- RIVERSIDE RIDING CLUB 2026 ALL BREED SPECTACULAR ✨
What a way to kick off the 2026 season! 🙌

Our annual All Breed Spectacular was a huge success, proudly sponsored by the ever-supportive Thompson & Redwood. We are incredibly grateful for their long-standing and generous support of this event. It was fantastic to have Carly Dagnell there to present our major awards 👏

The grounds were full, the rings were busy, the canteen was pumping and the weather was on our side ☀️ — everything you could hope for in a great show day!

📸 Huge thanks to Vicki Tapper & Cheryl Hanrahan for capturing all the action across four rings — be sure to check out their photos and support their work.

👩‍⚖️ Our Judges — Jenine Fawcett, Tanya Crocker, Janice Keelan & Leisa Clarson. Thank you for your time, expertise and professionalism.

🎤 Helen on the mic — a vital role to keep competitors informed all day… we appreciate you!
🏇 Ring Stewards — Dalene, Sonia, Ken & Maddie. 46 breeds, multiple rings… an incredible effort!
🍔 Canteen Crew — Eileen & Fiona. Absolutely smashed it — thank you ladies!

👏 A big thank you also to all our breed sponsors — your support is so valued. Winners, please take a moment to thank those who support your classes (full list in post).

HOW TO | Add Energy to Your Horse’s Diet — Without the “Heat”
Energy can sound scary, but it doesn’t need to be. Energy is essential for every horse and pony — supporting daily function, work, and performance. If your horse becomes “hot” or over‑reactive when energy is increased, it may be because:

- Their diet provides more energy than their workload requires
- The energy sources don’t suit the type of work they’re doing
- There’s a vitamin or mineral imbalance
- A health or functional issue is present

Horses obtain energy from different sources, and each behaves differently in the body. When more fuel is needed without more heat, the goal is choosing slow‑release energy sources that support performance without unwanted behaviour.

1️⃣ Focus on fibre first
Highly digestible fibre (quality hay, forage, lupin hulls) provides cool, steady, slow‑release energy. Fibre also supports gut health which is the foundation of calm, consistent performance.

2️⃣ Match energy to workload
Different work requires different fuel:
- Endurance, flatwork & steady training: fibre and fats for sustained energy
- High‑intensity or speed work: some starch may help, but must be carefully balanced
- Light work or spelling: lower energy density helps avoid unnecessary fizz

3️⃣ Choose fats over sugars
Oils and fat‑based feeds deliver concentrated, non‑heating energy without blood sugar spikes linked to high‑starch diets.

4️⃣ Balance vitamins & minerals
Imbalances can affect muscle function, recovery, and temperament. Magnesium, calcium, and vitamin E are especially important for working horses.

5️⃣ Support the gut
A healthy digestive system improves nutrient absorption and helps manage acidity, supporting both behaviour and performance.

6️⃣ Make changes gradually
All diet changes should be slow and measured to avoid digestive or behavioural upset.
