💡 Help your indoor cat stay active with enrichment and daily play. Indoor cats need regular activity to stay healthy and avoid boredom. Encourage movement with interactive toys like feather wands and schedule at least two short play sessions per day.

Cat trees, window perches and tunnels provide great opportunities to climb, stalk and explore. Puzzle feeders and hiding food around the home are also excellent ways to get them moving. A stimulated cat is a happier, healthier cat. 🐾

If you'd like more advice on keeping your indoor cat active, contact our clinic to arrange a consultation.

🦴Bones are a topic that divides veterinary opinion. 🦴

On the plus side, raw bones can help support dental health and provide mental enrichment. However, bones, particularly cooked ones, can splinter and cause choking, intestinal perforations or blockages.

Size matters too: a bone that's too small can be swallowed whole. If you do feed bones, always supervise your pet, opt for raw over cooked, and choose an appropriate size. When in doubt, ask your vet. ⚠️

Contact our clinic if you'd like advice on safe chewing options for your dog.

Did you know that how you feed your dog can be just as enriching as a walk?

Instead of a plain bowl, try using a puzzle feeder, lick mat or snuffle mat to make your dog work for their meal. You can also scatter kibble in the grass or hide it around the house for a nose-work session. Mental stimulation like this helps tire dogs out, reduces boredom-related behaviours and builds confidence, particularly in anxious dogs. 🐾

💡 Ditch the bowl and make meal times a fun mental workout for your dog.

Speak with our team if you'd like more enrichment ideas or to book a consultation.

⚠️ Short-statured dogs need extra monitoring to ensure good joint health. Chondrodysplastic breeds, such as Dachshunds, Bulldogs, Corgis and French Bulldogs, are bred with shortened limbs. While undeniably adorable, this conformation can come with health challenges, including intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and joint problems.

Owners of these breeds should be aware of the signs of pain or discomfort and schedule regular vet checks to stay on top of their unique health needs. 🦴

If you have a short-legged breed and notice any signs of discomfort, arrange a consultation with our vets.

Kittens grow rapidly, so monitoring their body condition is important for optimal health.

A healthy kitten should have ribs that are able to be felt but not prominent, a slight waist when viewed from above, and a small amount of tummy fat. They should feel firm and muscular, not bony or with a swollen belly.

Regular weigh-ins at home or at the clinic are a great way to track their development during those crucial early months. 🐾

💡 Keep an eye on your kitten's body condition as they grow. Contact our clinic if you'd like help assessing your kitten’s body condition.

If your dog needs to lose weight, it’s best to go slow. Rapid weight loss can be harmful, so we typically aim for a loss of around 1–2% of body weight per week.

Our vets can calculate a target weight and daily calorie intake. Swapping treats for low-energy alternatives like carrot sticks, increasing exercise gradually, and using measured meals instead of free-feeding are all great starting points. 🥕

💡 Healthy weight loss in dogs should be gradual.
If you're concerned about your dog’s weight, arrange a consultation with our vets.

Joint supplements can help pets with arthritis or mobility issues. Green-lip mussel, omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine and chondroitin are all options. These can help reduce inflammation, support joint health and improve comfort.

While supplements are available over the counter, it's best to chat with your vet before starting them, as not all products are equal, and the right choice depends on your pet's specific needs. 🦴

Book a consultation with our clinic if you would like advice on the right joint supplements and joint care.💡

“Why has my cat suddenly started urinating outside of their litter tray?” 🐱

An alteration in feline toileting habits may occur due to:
🔎 A urinary health problem, such as cystitis (bladder inflammation)
🦴 A general health issue, such as arthritis that makes it difficult for the cat to climb into their litter tray and squat comfortably
😿 Behavioural issues, such as anxiety

If your cat has suddenly changed their weeing habits, it’s recommended to have them assessed promptly by one of our knowledgeable vets, who can help get to the “bottom” of your cat’s issue.

Does my dog need regular ear cleaning? 👂🐶

Healthy ears generally only require an occasional gentle wipe out if they become wet, sandy or muddy.

However, some dogs may require routine ear cleaning if they:
💡 Naturally produce a large amount of wax
💡 Have hairy ear canals that tend to get matted and cause issues
💡 Have an underlying issue that affects their ear health, such as skin allergies

If your dog’s ears ever develop unusual discharge, or are red, smelly or sore, it’s best to g-ear up and book a check-up with one of our friendly vets. 🐾

If your pet is scared of the nail clippers, it can be stressful for everyone involved to try to keep their claws at a comfortable length. ✂️🐶

Avoid forcing your pet to have their nails clipped, as this will likely increase their fear. Instead, consult our vets for help!

Paw-sitive options for nail-sensitive pets include:
🐾 Calming aids, e.g. treat distraction
🐾 Gentle assistance from our experienced team
🐾 Trialling a professional nail grinding tool
🐾 Situational anti-anxiety medications
🐾 Referral to a qualified trainer for desensitisation and counterconditioning training
🐾 Sedation

Our team can help tailor a plan to make nail care safer and less stressful for your pet. 💛

“Uh oh – my pet needs to go into boarding, but I’m not sure if they’re still up to date with their vaccinations. What should I do?” 🐾

If you’re unsure about where your pet stands with their vaccination protection, consult our friendly team.

If your pet is up to date with all their required vaccinations, they can attend boarding at any point.

However, if they have become significantly overdue, you will need to have them re-vaccinated by a certain time in advance to ensure both acceptance by the boarding facility and adequate protection for your pet.💉

PSA (pet service announcement): a reminder that if your cat ever goes outdoors (or lives with a pet who does) or attends a boarding facility, they should be on regular parasite prevention! 🐱

The specific parasite prevention recommended for your cat depends on your geographical area, but will usually include:
🦟 Flea protection
🪱 Treatment/control of intestinal worms including roundworm, hookworm and tapeworm
🐛 Treatment/control of lungworms

Many cats will also need protection against ticks (particularly paralysis ticks) and heartworm.

For personalised advice on the easiest and most effective parasite control routines for your cat, consult our knowledgeable veterinary team. 🐾
