Returning to work after parental leave can be challenging, especially if you have experienced perinatal mental illness.

There are a range of strategies you can put in place to manage your mental health and ease the transition.

It’s normal to feel complex emotions about returning to work outside the home after you have a baby.

You may find yourself looking forward to:

✅Returning to your work identity.
✅Enjoying work that you are comfortable and familiar with.
✅Catching up with work colleagues.
✅Having more money.

Yet at the same time, you might feel uncertain about:

❌How you will manage the juggle.
❌The impact work will have on your mental health.

🟡 Birth Trauma Awareness Week 🟡

What is birth trauma?

There is no one definition of a "traumatic birth". What matters is how YOU felt- during the experience, and in the days, months and years afterwards.

You know your body, your own heart, mind and your baby best. If the birth felt in any way distressing for you, for any reason, you may be experiencing birth trauma. No-one else can tell you ‘how’ your birth was, when you’re the one who lived through that experience.

The way you feel about your birth experience can deeply affect your emotional wellbeing and mental health, attachment and bonding with your baby, and how you feel about being a parent.

Signs you may be experiencing birth trauma include:
🔺 Distress or anxiety when you think about your birth experience
🔺 Flashbacks or intrusive thoughts about your birth
🔺 Nightmares
🔺 Hyper-vigilance about your baby's health and safety
🔺 Difficulty sleeping
🔺 General feelings of panic or anxiety, being "on edge".

Can you see your maternity records?

Sometimes people find it helpful to see their maternity records to understand what happened during their care. You have a right to see your own health records. You do not need a reason. It can be useful to request your records if you want to make a complaint about your care.

You can ask your GP, midwife, doctor or health visitor to obtain your records so that you can see them. You do not need a form to do this but can simply ask them at any time. You will need to go in person to the hospital or GP surgery to see your records in that way.

You can also make a formal email request to see your records. This is called a subject access request, and you make it in writing.

Dads or birthing partners play a vital role during labour and delivery, and it is not uncommon to experience birth trauma themselves. 💙

During a difficult birth, Mum may be in a confused or semi-conscious state, however the birthing partner is generally fully aware. Dads or birthing partners often don’t acknowledge their trauma because they weren’t the ones to physically birth and feel as though they should be strong.

Symptoms of birth trauma may include flashbacks, nightmares, triggers (smell or noises), feeling angry, confused or depressed. You may have a preoccupation with your baby’s health and regularly check on them or worry something bad will happen.

There are many supports that offer a safe place for you to navigate these thoughts and feelings:

“In a study of newborn infants immediately after birth, where one group slept skin-to-skin on their biological mother and the other group slept in a bassinet beside her bed, sleep patterns and physiology were altered.

Babies sleeping without contact took longer to get into quiet sleep, had less time in quiet sleep, and had heart rate variability consistent with high stress.

But babies sleeping touching their mothers entered quiet sleep faster, had more time in quiet sleep, and had more REM sleep and less active sleep – suggesting a lot more time in restorative sleep patterns that build the brain.”
