WHY YOU SHOULD ADOPT A SENIOR DOG💛🐾
Cody is a sweet 11 year old senior dog who is coming in from the pound for rehoming next week. We don’t know much about Cody yet so instead, we’ve asked a volunteer to share her story of adopting a senior dog, in the hopes that it will inspire someone to open their heart to Cody🥺❤️🩹
When my husband and I picked up 11 year old Chloe from a failed home trial and seeing how sad she was, we took her home instead of returning her to a kennel. This strong-willed senior staffy cross was too much for the senior lady that had considered adopting her but we still thought of her as the elderly dog that we had seen slowly moping around the kennels before she went out on trial.
We didn’t realise how young Chloe’s spirit was until we took her to the beach and unclipped her lead. Chloe ran straight into the waves, then took off up the beach. For an hour she ran up and down, splashing in the waves, pure joy all over her face🥰
We had 4 amazing years with Chloe before we had to say goodbye. The joy she took from every experience reminded us to appreciate the little things in life. She loved the wind in her ears on every car ride, the splash of the ocean, the excitement of watching birds fly into the trees as she charged across the oval and the curiosity of examining puddles at the park after a big rainstorm or barking at the thunder. Chloe experienced life with an energy and enthusiasm that I can only wish I had🌊🐾
So many times in rescues, people tell us that they can’t adopt a senior dog because it’s so sad saying goodbye or it will be too upsetting for their children. Of course it is heart breaking when they go, but it’s worth it for the love they give you while they are here. What better way to teach your children empathy than for them to experience first-hand the kindness of giving a loving home to a dog, not because it is the cutest, or the youngest rescue available, but instead because it is the most desperate. These dogs spent their whole lives devoted to someone who abandoned them when they were the most vulnerable. Putting the needs of another above your own is a valuable lesson, and losing a beloved dog is a heartbreaking experience that can also help children grow into strong, resilient and compassionate adults. I like to think that I did.
And if you are wondering why we don’t just adopt Cody ourselves, it’s because we already have a full house, with 12 and 13 year old dogs that we adopted earlier this year, and a 21 year old cat that we adopted 2 years ago.
Cody may be in his golden years, but he still has so much love to give💛 Help us make sure he doesn’t spend them in a shelter — get in touch today.
