Whippets are built to run.
It’s what they were designed to do. While training, enrichment toys and mental stimulation are important parts of a dog’s life, nothing truly replaces the benefits of a proper free run.
As sighthounds, whippets are naturally wired for sprinting and hunting. Giving them a safe space to run freely allows them to stretch their muscles, release built up energy and do what comes naturally to them. Chasing a ball or toy, will tap into their natural instinct and adds an extra level of mental and physical satisfaction.
Regular opportunities to run help keep whippets fit, strong and mentally balanced. These dogs are natural athletes, and maintaining good muscle tone and a healthy, lean weight is important for their joints, overall health and longevity.
Walks, training sessions and enrichment activities are great additions to their routine, but they don’t fully replicate the physical and mental release that comes from a full speed sprint and chase.
My whippets run daily and it makes a huge difference to their wellbeing and overall condition. After a good run they’re usually more than happy to curl up on the couch and sleep the rest of the day, the classic whippet way.
A whippet that can run, stay fit and maintain a healthy weight is a happy whippet.
