❗️🚨TICK ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨❗️

With the arrival of spring in Australia, it is essential to ensure your cats and dogs are current with their tick prevention.

Paralysis ticks are extremely perilous parasites whose toxin can cause paralysis and

❓️DID YOU KNOW❓️

🔴 Although ticks are present year-round, recent rainfall and sunshine have created optimal conditions for fleas and ticks, potentially leading to an increase in numbers.

🔴 Fleas and ticks can infiltrate homes through human contact, plants, and other means, posing a risk to even indoor-only pets.

Symptoms of Paralysis Ticks include:
👉 Coughing,
👉 Gagging,
👉 Vomiting,
👉 Changes in vocalization,
👉 Difficulty breathing,
👉 Unsteady gait,
👉 Paralysis,
👉 Weakness,
👉 Collapse, and
👉 Choking (in cats).

If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms please call straight away.

If you find a tick on your pet or suspect one, please schedule an appointment or consult our nurses for assistance. Caution is always the best approach.

⚠️⛔️🚨HEARTWORM CASES🚨 ⛔️⚠️

With the increase in Heartworm cases, it is vital to know the signs, test for and prevent Heartworm.

WHAT CAUSES HEARTWORM?
Heartworm is caused by a blood parasite that migrate though tissue until they enter the vascular system. They make their home on the right side of the lungs and in the pulmonary arteries where they obstruct blood flow to the heart affecting the rest of the body.
Once an infected dog is bitten by a mosquito 🦟, the mosquito becomes a host. Upon biting another dog, they inject the larval worm under the skin.

SIGNS OF HEARTWORM IN DOGS
> Coughing
> Shortness of breath
> Weightloss
> Unwillingness to exercise
> Fever
> Abdominal swelling

SIGNS OF HEARTWORM IN CATS
> Vomiting
> Lethargy
> Breathing difficulties
> Weight loss
> Convulsions

Signs are often subtle and hard to detect. Treatment is costly and not without its own risks. As of 2027 the treatment for heartworm may no longer be available!

PREVENTION is the best option.

🐾 Let’s Talk FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) 🐾

Here in Australia, FIV is more common than in many other countries, so it’s important for cat owners to know the facts.

👉 How is FIV spread?
FIV is mainly passed on through bite wounds from an infected cat.

👉 What does it mean if a cat is FIV positive?

FIV is not a death sentence – many cats can live long, happy lives.

Some cats may be more prone to infections or dental disease.

In the long term, FIV-positive cats are at a higher risk of developing cancer such as lymphoma.

👉 When should cats be tested?

If they are unwell (weight loss, ongoing illness, anaemia, dental disease, behavioural changes, etc.).

After cat fights (8 weeks later).

Before dental procedures.

Prior to FIV vaccination.

When introducing a new cat into your household.
