✨ To say we are grateful is an understatement ✨
On Saturday the 23rd, 90 incredible people came together for a night of fun and trivia — all in support of the animals. The entire event was lovingly organised by our amazing volunteer, Lucy O'Brien , who in just six weeks put together something that far exceeded all of our expectations.
Together, the night raised an incredible $10,300, which will be shared between us and FreeHearts Animal Sanctuary . Our share will go directly towards purchasing a horse float — a vital piece of equipment that will act as an ambulance and emergency transport for our residents, ensuring they can always receive urgent care when they need it most.
Lucy summed it up beautifully in her speech:
“The only reason they get to live, is because of people like you, who are willing to share what you have. People who are willing to give to the animals, knowing that they will get nothing in exchange. Nothing, except the beautiful and simple joy of knowing that these animals will get to live in peace and love, free of harm and fear.
More widely, these animals and their stories become symbols of hope. Our hope is that people will connect to these animals, and think about all of the others just like them — the ones who couldn’t be rescued, who don’t get to live in peace and safety.”

Why Sanctuaries Exist 💚

Sanctuaries are not just “cute places to pat animals.” They are safe havens, the difference between life and death for animals who have been exploited, abandoned, abused, or destined for slaughter.

Every resident here has a story. Many were rescued from industries that saw them as products, not individuals. At Gaia’s Serenity, they get to live free from harm, make friends, and express their personalities without fear.

Sanctuaries exist because the world still treats animals as commodities — but here, they are family. Our mission is to show that every cow, pig, goat, and horse has the same right to live as the dogs and cats we share our homes with.

When you support a sanctuary, you’re helping rewrite the ending of their stories. 🐷🐮🐐

Queensland's largest agricultural show, the Ekka, is right around the corner. At the Ekka, thousands of animals are transported into Brisbane to be 'showed' and judged. It's an unnatural environment for the animals where they are confined, surrounded by large, noisy crowds, and often unable to seek shelter to avoid contact with humans if they choose. They certainly aren't having fun.

Claiming to also be an opportunity to provide an educational experience about animal agriculture, including VR experiences of "paddock to plate", some key information tends to be missed. Showing inside intensive factory farms and slaughterhouses would not align with the picture-perfect farm that is often portrayed, but people deserve to know the full story. The animals need us to know so that we can do better.

💚 Instead of attending the Ekka this year, here are a few things you can do instead:
🐮 Book a tour at your local animal sanctuary
🌱 Attend the Vegan Ekka at 'The Green Edge' (Windsor, QLD)
📖 Educate yourself about animal agriculture, watch DOMINION
📣 Share this post to let your friends and family know why they shouldn't attend, and help to organise a fun day somewhere else.

Welcome to our new followers! 🌿💚
We’re Gareth and Emily — part of the team behind Gaia’s Serenity, a 34-animal sanctuary nestled in Ormeau Hills on the Gold Coast. Gareth is our founder, and I (Emily) am the heart behind bringing Gaia’s story to the world.
Our sanctuary began in 2023 and has grown quickly, now home to a beautiful crew of rescued goats, pigs, cows, and horses. 🐐🐖🐄🐎
This photo was snapped right before we spoke at the Action 4 Animals forum — taking a quiet moment on a kid’s playground before stepping on stage. This is just a reminder that running a sanctuary can be a little chaotic, very human, and always full of heart.
We’re powered by passion, community, and an amazing team of volunteers. While we’re mostly self-funded, we warmly welcome donations.
