It has been a busy few days at the silk and crest homestead, the storms have passed now for the clean up, 🫣 so much mud! The wet bought out a sneaky fox who damaged my coop - thankfully was not able to get in!!! so all coops got an upgrade, a new additional one is in the process of being constructed, 7 little boys found loving homes, the polish teenagers have moved into the bigger silkie teenager coop now the boys are gone and some room has been made… then the winds picked up today and one of my temporary coops tried to fly away *sign* I saved it but all the babies got out… lucky they are well behaved!! Oh my girls are on a laying strike except one who got cranky at me for checking for an egg under her broodyness, nope, just sitting on nothing… bring back the warm weather and some eggs!!

One of the most commonly asked questions I get is how can you tell their gender without having to wait until they lay an egg or crow?

DNA solutions in Victoria is a great company that do super fast gender DNA testing I’ve used it a few times and found it super easy!

But otherwise…. 8-10 weeks look at the wattles and walnut.

This photo that I took the chicks are around 10 weeks old and this is when it becomes more clear! You can see The chick (cockerel - boy) on the left has big dangling wattles, the chick (pullet - girl) on the right has tiny flat wattles.

I generally say wait till 12 weeks to be sure as some boys are late developers but if they have big wattles and a protruding walnut by 8 weeks you can be sure you have a boy.

What do we do when there’s an east coast low… improvise!!!

These 2 mums and their 9 chicks have given new life to this portacot and are not complaining being housed in my warm horse float for a few nights.
