⚠️ ADVICE: Cessnock Road Fire, Abermain (Cessnock LGA) ⚠️

A bush fire is burning in the Abermain, Kurri Kurri, South Weston and Pelaw Main areas.

The fire has burnt more than 750ha and is being controlled.

If you are in the areas of Abermain, Kurri Kurri, South Weston and Pelaw Main, stay alert and monitor your surroundings.

Current Situation

➡️ Three bush fires which started in the areas of Cessnock Road, Charles Street and Hebburn Road in Abermain have joined and burnt around Kurri Kurri Hospital, towards Pelaw Main and Boundary St, Kurri Kurri.

➡️ Yesterday afternoon and evening firefighters undertook a small tactical back burn within the centre of the fire to manage unburnt fuels ahead of deteriorating weather conditions forecast for today.

➡️ Firefighters continued to strengthen containment lines today, mopping up and blacking out.

Stay Informed

➡️ Stay up to date on bush fires in your area by checking Hazards Near Me, the RFS website, listening to your local radio station, or by calling the RFS Bush Fire Information Line on 1800 679 737.

Firefighters continue to work on containing the Cessnock Road, Abermain Fire which is burning between Cessnock and Kurri Kurri.

The fire which started yesterday, has burnt out more than 750 hectares of bushland. The fire remains at an Advice alert level.

Firefighters have commenced back burning in an area of unburnt vegetation within the fireground ahead of deteriorating weather conditions tomorrow.

This will reduce the amount of available fuel on the ground for the fire to burn through tomorrow.

With forecast Extreme fire danger tomorrow for the Greater Hunter, it’s important that you stay up to date with the latest information through the ‘Hazards Near Me’ smart phone app and the RFS website. Discuss what you and your family will do in the event of a fire.

A reminder not to fly drones over or near a bush fire. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority - CASA enforces strict regulations for flying drones, especially during fire emergencies.

Flying a drone near or over a fire can ground all firefighting aircraft in the area and could put people, property and aircraft at risk.

Know your drone and rules - more information at www.casa.gov.au/knowyourdrone

Unfortunately, we have a sad update on the status of this kitty. We did indeed find the owner, and have established her name is Bluebell. As the afternoon progressed, Bluebell's condition deteriorated quickly due to smoke damage. Thankfully we were able to speak to her loving owner shortly before having to humanely euthanise.
We are very thankful to the officers who brought her to us last night and we were able to keep her comfortable.
Thank you to everyone who shared their love, thoughts and this post. Such a beautiful and caring community.
RIP Bluebell

We need your help…..
Last night the police brought this (extremely affectionate) cat to us from Weston where it had been cornered by the fires.
Even with its singed whiskers & burnt paw pads, it’s clearly someone’s well loved family member (& also came with a kitten).
We would love to re-unite, but we want to make sure it’s with the correct family.
We will ask anyone claiming to be the owner for additional identifying details.
If you are the owner, please call 4957 7106

The current state of rescue work and life, in general, is incredibly exhausting. Every day is a battle to muster the strength to face not only the lingering issues from yesterday that we couldn't resolve but also the new challenges that today will bring.

Each night, I lay down with the faces of the animals on the pound lists and the messages from pounds and community members who are desperately seeking help, never leaving my thoughts. This phase of rescue has never been this demanding, both emotionally and mentally.

The pleas for assistance keep pouring in, growing in number day by day.
Recently, I had a conversation with another seasoned rescuer who has been at this longer than I have, and she too is worn out, drained, and emotionally overwhelmed by the current situation.

What many of you may not be aware of is that a few months ago, we were reported to the RSPCA for concerns about our animals. Although we passed the inspection and the report was baseless, we had to make some adjustments to our policies and procedures.

Our Facility is categorised as a boarding establishment under the guidelines, and we must adhere to the same operational criteria, even though we don't generate any income from housing the animals on-site.

This change has set off a chain of events that we are still trying to navigate.

The inspection highlighted the need for more reliable help and made it clear that we couldn't continue as we were. As a result, we've brought on two dedicated staff members to oversee the kennels and care for the animals, as we couldn't solely rely on volunteers.

We are now fortunate to have two incredible team members, James and Leecy, who are extremely dedicated and consistently go above and beyond. Additionally, our community group, Happy Paws Happy Hearts, is now on-site daily, running their programs and assisting with our animals in care.

While this all may sound wonderful—and believe me, it is—it also brings about a new challenge: how do we sustain our operations when the facility doesn't generate income? Currently, we're covering the operational costs privately, but this is not a sustainable solution and places additional financial strain and stress on our families.

While we do run fundraising campaigns to cover vet bills and purchase essential supplies, we need YOUR HELP to keep the facility up and running. We face the same expenses as any regular business: insurance, wages, electricity, water, and more. Moreover, we must figure out a way to continue building our new facility.

So, here's my proposal: we have a substantial following on our page, and if each of you were to contribute just $1 per week (which is tax-deductible, by the way), we could make it work.

To you, $1 a week may not seem like much, but as a united community, that $1 can keep our doors open.

Will you consider joining us and lending a hand?

If you head to our website we have set up a quick link to sign up right on the front page and you will see our thermometer which will show each day how many supporters have stepped up to help. Our goal is for a minimum of 3000 members to sign up by Christmas.

WILL YOU BE ONE OF THEM?
