Happy Easter to all our fellow vets and animal lovers! 🐰🌸🥚

We know this time of year is filled with chocolate eggs, hot cross buns, and all things sweet—but let’s not forget that some of our favorite treats can be dangerous for our furry friends! 🍫❌

A little Easter safety reminder:
🐾 Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats—keep those Easter eggs out of paws' reach!
🐾 Xylitol (found in some sugar-free treats) is highly toxic to pets.
🐾 Foil wrappers & plastic grass can be a choking hazard or cause blockages.
🐾 Hot cross buns contain raisins, which are dangerous for dogs.

Enjoy the Easter festivities, but let’s keep our pets safe and happy too! 🐶🐱💛

Hair Dye for Pets 🌈🟣🔵

Dogs and cats' fur can be safely dyed using pet-safe, non-toxic dyes. If your pet has a skin condition, always check with your vet first!

Unlike human hair dye, which can contain harsh chemicals, pet-friendly dyes are made to be gentle on their skin and coat. Want some fun natural alternatives? Beet juice makes pink, turmeric makes yellow and blueberries might give your pet a purple tint!

Reflective Eyes Explained 👀✨️

Did you know, when dog's eyes reflect light like the boxer in this photo, it's due to a special feature called the Tapetum Lucidum. It's a layer of tissue behind the retina that improves their night vision by reflecting more light into their eyes. Dogs and cats have it but humans don't!

The brightness and colour of the reflection depends on the width of the pupil and the angle of the light, but it is usually a yellow/greenish colour.

A Special Little Visitor! 🦔💛

This adorable puggle (baby echidna) was brought into our clinic by a kind member of the public after being found alone. After a health check and some TLC, we’ve transferred this little one to the amazing team at Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital, where they’ll receive expert care until they’re ready to return to the wild.

If you ever find injured or orphaned wildlife, remember to contact your vet or local wildlife rescue for guidance. 🦔💚

✨️How Spicy is Your Pet? 🌶

We know every pet has a unique personality, some more fiesta than others. Because we can have a lot of staff working at our clinics, we have created these "Spice Charts" to help everyone understand a patient's behaviour before they even meet!

The "mild" snuggler loves extra attention and an occasional belly rub, the "medium" spice may prefer to be left alone or requires a slow and quiet approach. Our "extra spicy" is reserved for those animals that need to be handled with care.

This helps our team prepare and give your pet the best experience while they're in hospital.

💡Here are the FACTS:

Just because your dog isn’t yelping doesn’t mean they’re not in pain. 🐾 Many dogs are experts at hiding discomfort, especially when it comes to chronic pain like arthritis or injuries. 🐶💔

Here are some signs your dog might be in pain, even if they’re silent:

👉Changes in behavior or mood (more irritable or withdrawn)
👉Difficulty getting up or moving around
👉Decreased appetite or reluctance to eat
👉Excessive licking or chewing at a certain area

Always trust your instincts! If something seems off, it’s always worth getting your pet checked by a vet. 🩺💖

Kodhi was ready for his big adventure at the vet – with a little friend by his side 🐾 He may not have known exactly what was coming, but we knew he was in great hands. 🐕‍🦺

A big shoutout to our wonderful vet team for making him feel at ease, and to Kodhi for being such a trooper! 💕 After a little rest, he’ll be back to his playful self in no time.

🐶 Contagious Yawning 😱

If you yawn around your dog, they might yawn too! This is a sign of empathy, meaning your pup might actually be emotionally connected to you.

Studies have shown that dogs are more likely to yawn when a familiar person yawns than when a stranger does. This suggests a level of social bonding and possible empathy.

Some experiments found dogs did not yawn when just seeing a yawn-like mouth movement but did when a real yawn was heard or seen.
