A Day In The Life Of
A Hobby Farmer

For starters, I thought a hobby was supposed to be enjoyable and relaxing? Either we are doing it wrong or a name change should be considered. 'Not for profit farmer' feels more appropriate.

It is lambing time i guess, which never brings out the best in us, and to top it off we are also half way through calving.

Coming off the high of Owen's gate mishap with the weaners, i cockily set about this morning to move some of the pregnant ewes into a fresh paddock.

Always risky when there are a few sets of newborn lambs dotted in amongst the mob, but lack of feed made it necessary. I went around and set the gates up and sent them on their way. All looked well, the newborns mothers stayed behind with their babies and the rest set off. Perfect.

Leaving them to calmly meander around to their new paddock, I cut out to move some horses to a fresh paddock on the other side of the property.

Feeling good, thinking I may get to sit down and watch an episode of 'Outlander' whilst having lunch, my heart sank when I looked up and saw a large mob of lambs and ewes running along the driveway. Their fat bellies swaying and panicked lambs scattering.

It was at about this point that I once again began to question my lifes choices. Working sheep always has that feeling of being a moment away from calling defeat. I felt an annoyance creeping in, not only at myself and the sheep but also at my husband for being at work, the damn dog for sitting on the atv (looking thrilled with the turn of events) and the sideways rain that chose this moment to arrive.

I shuffled the unruly mob into the 'tip' paddock easily enough, grabbing a couple of wayward lambs, i hoped the matter was resolved. They could stay put in the 'tip' paddock for a few days anyway, so I shut the gate and went to find what had gone wrong.

Turns out that instead of getting the gates right, I had been thinking about the strands of grey hairs that have started appearing around my crown and wondering if I should start colouring my hair (to make myself look '10 years younger'), or whether I will be one of those graceful women who chooses to grow old naturally? Or maybe it was the persistent ear ache that lambing season seems to produce or kids sports, pony club committe or what we will have for dinner tonight? Whatever it was, it turned a 10 minute job into an all day event, since two ewes who hadn't been successful in their escape, had now decided to begin giving birth in the laneway close to their new paddock.

So, I've shut them in the laneway and left them to it. After giving a shot of antibiotics to a sickly lamb, bottle feeding Tiddles the lamb, throwing some lucerne to a cow who gave birth to twins yesterday and the horses who had been watching the show, I have come inside for a cup of tea! I am now considering if I should apologise to my husband for calling him 'farmer do**he bag' the other day, for leaving a gate open, or if i should have just kept quiet about today's events.

Oh and if anyone can recommend where to buy a set of waterproof overalls in Mount Gambier please let me know!!

And so it begins 🫣........

When farmer do**he bag forgets to shut a gate and the yearlings go frolicking through your horse paddocks 🙄

😱😱😱😱ELIMINATED 😱😱😱😱

We headed to Heywood Pony Club Horse Trials this weekend. Lovely venue, friendly people, an easy start time (12 midday) and only an hour from home.

Things were looking good, after a lovely dressage test and clear show jumping round, Penelope and Pickle were sitting in second place (out of 9 competitors) .

Things began to spiral in a downwards direction when we got to the x-country phase and realised every other competitor had already walked the course earlier in the day. Ok. No problem. Off to the office to photograph the map, which turned out to only be accessed via an ap. Those who know me 🫠

A lovely helper got me set up with ap and map, before sending us towards the start box to walk the course. Assuring us everything would be 'fine' and it was ok for us to walk it while horses were already on course. We set out, overwhelmed with fear, that if we were responsible for ruining someone elses x-country ride, we would likely never be able to show our faces at another horse event. Ever.

With this in mind, we probably didn't walk the course as thoroughly as we should have.........

This became apparent, about halfway through Penelopes x-country ride, when she came across a sneaky culvert/ditch running the width of the course, between jump 7 and 8.

Pickle (being the good boy he is), took a giant leap, clearing the culvert at full speed (i did afterall advise to steady at the jumps and make up time in between).

What a fun surprise for Penelope!

Interpreting Penelopes loss of balance as encouragement for more fun, Pickle *might* have put in a few extra little skips, which sealed the devilish deal.

Needless to say, this is where the elimination came in to play!

Thank fully Penelope wasn't sad about the elimination for long, getting in the car she realised today is Sunday and tomorrow is her first day back at school ✌️

Well, it wasn't the best weather for it but nonetheless, the show went on at the South East Zone Chapionships!

Special thank you to the South East Zone committee for all of their hard work organising the event, Beachport Pony Club for being welcoming hosts and Nadyne Schipp and June Whitehead for judging.

The event ran smoothly, thanks to the good sportsmanship between clubs and the many hands who stepped in to do their bit.

Penelope had a fantastic weekend, coming away with 'E Grade Horse of The Year', making the hard work pay off. Thank you to Lucie Hill Equestrian for her coaching and encouragement of Penelope and Pickle.

Pickle did embarrass the family by taking his head collar off over his ears, then making a break for it from the float. Everyone was sitting in the club rooms during presentations, when he was seen galloping across the sand dunes and out of sight! (he soon came back) 😁

What a wonderful weekend we had at the Glenfield Stockmans Challenge, hosted by Lynda Field at the Mount Gambier & Districts Pony Club .

It was Penelope and Pickles first attempt together at some obstacles and they had so much fun together.

Thank you to Lynda for putting on such a great event, the work to get something like this up and going (and then to run smoothly), points towards weeks of preparation and experience.

Thank you to the members of Mount Gambier Pony Club who volunteered their time to get grounds ready and assist during the event.

Thank you to Steph Cooper for sponsoring Penelopes class and also taking her time to judge. It was lovely to acknowledge the skills of the kids, whilst also making sure no child left without something to show for it.

Thank you to Maddy Ciavatta MC Equine for the photos she took and gave me of Penelope in action.

Penelope and I were lucky enough to experience the NZ countryside on board our cousins magnificent horses.

Thank you Jeremy Wales and Dinah Wales for taking us out on the farm and giving us such an amazing opportunity.

No photos of the 'adults only' ride, because we were going too fast!! Why take the time opening any gates, when you can just jump all the fences 😁
