Introducing New People to Your Dog -
Why Structure Matters!
Introducing new people to your dog/particularly within an established pack in the household it should always be approached with structure and intent, especially when anxiety is present.
For many dogs, unfamiliar interactions can be overwhelming. If not managed correctly, this can negatively impact their trust, confidence, and overall perception of leadership.
When working with dogs that display heightened anxiety or may present a potential risk, preparation is essential. Take the time to communicate with all people involved prior to the introduction. Set clear expectations and provide calm, simple instructions to ensure the interaction remains controlled and predictable.
Advocating for your dog is critical. This involves setting appropriate boundaries, guiding the interaction, and intervening when necessary to prevent escalation. Without this support, a dog may become overwhelmed, leading to stress-based behaviours such as reactivity, redirection onto handlers, inappropriate responses toward guests or even redirect within the pack toward another dog .
This can also lead to serious risks of injury to everyone involved .
A structured and well-managed approach not only ensures the safety of everyone involved, but also supports your dog in developing positive associations, confidence, and trust over time.
Every interaction is a training opportunity—set your dog up for success.
