Things may have been quiet on BFFR socials, but behind the scenes it’s been anything but.

Since our last update on Primrose & Co, we’ve experienced both heartbreak and resilience. On New Year’s Eve, during a routine weight check, I found the smallest kitten taking his final breaths. All I could do was hold him and tell him that he was loved as he passed peacefully in my hands. It was a devastating reminder of just how fragile these tiny baby's are.

The next morning brought another emergency, I woke to find the kittens were covered in severe diarrhoea, and knew we couldn’t wait. Thanks to the incredible support of we were able to get Primrose and all her babies in to be seen by the vet. After hours of waiting and receiving supportive care, they came home with medications and supplements to give them the best possible chance. Despite doing everything, we sadly lost another baby later that evening.

The days that followed were exhausting in every sense. Primrose was unwell herself and unable to toilet her kittens, so around-the-clock care became essential. Every few hours, I toileted the babies to help keep them clean to protect their already fragile skin and support their recovery.

Today, I’m incredibly grateful to share that Primrose and her five surviving kittens are now thriving. Seeing them grow stronger and begin to play together has been one of those deeply moving rescue moments. A reminder of why we keep going, even when it’s heartbreaking.

Thank you so much to our wonderful friend Marlene from Five Furry Friends Rescue for being part of this journey with us and helping this sweet family survive.

Extreme heat is taking a devastating toll on Melbourne’s bats 💔
This week, our friends at Microbats of Melbourne are caring for hundreds of heat-affected bats across multiple colonies, and they urgently need fruit donations to help keep them alive.

If you’re in South East Melbourne and have a red apple or pear tree, your fruit could make a real difference. Please reach out so that we can recommend several convenient drop-off points including Woking Amazing in Thornbury who will be delivering donations tonight.

During this incredibly stressful time, we also ask that people stay away from colony areas so volunteers can provide the care our batty friends desperately need.
Thank you for showing compassion when it matters most 🦇❤️

‼️ HOME SAFE AFTER TWO WEEKS ‼️

We are beyond happy to share that senior foster kitty Boots is home safe after being missing for two long weeks!

With the amazing help from his foster family and by following the recommendations from ScaredyCats.com.au, we finally got the breakthrough we’d been hoping with all our hearts for.

On Friday 02/01, we received a call from a lovely local resident who had seen our missing flyer and believed a cat matching Boots’ description had been visiting her back garden, two blocks from where he went missing. With her permission, we set up food and a wildlife camera overnight, and the next morning the footage confirmed it was Boots that had been visiting her yard for fresh water!

On Saturday 03/01, Boots’ favourite person attended the property during the same hours Boots had appeared the night before. After waiting patiently with food, Boots slowly emerged. He was very scared, but he responded with his very distinctive old man meows when spoken to. After around two hours, he found his confidence, enjoyed some well-deserved pats, some fresh tuna and was calmly guided into his carrier.

Boots was then safely transported home to BFFR HQ where he feels the most safest and has settled back in like he never left 🏡💙

Thank you to everyone who shared posts, kept an eye out, and supported this search. We are so glad to welcome home Boots and know he is finally sade after such a big scare of not knowing if he was ok.

🐈‍⬛Two weeks of not knowing.
One moment that changed everything🐈‍⬛

Last night, we had our first official sighting of Boots, our very much loved senior boy who escaped his new foster home just before Christmas 💔

Every morning without a sighting broke our hearts a little more. But we never gave up hope and his amazing foster mum kept setting up the camera because with scared, displaced cats, patience is everything. That knowledge kept us going.

Over the past two weeks, we’ve been incredibly grateful for the guidance and unwavering support of the amazing woman behind ScaredyCats.com.au. Her many years of experience helping the most vulnerable cats has been invaluable, and her resources are truly lifesaving for situations like this. We cannot recommend her work enough.

Seeing Boots alive on the wildlife camera makes every long, worrying night worth it. We are closer than ever to bringing him home safely. 🐾

Team BFFR will be out again tonight, patient and full of hope.

Please keep Boots in your thoughts and if you’d like to send him some love, drop a 🖤 or 🐾 below so he knows how many people are cheering him on.

🌩Meet Thunder & Lightning🌩
Bonded brothers that are the perfect fluffy storm!

Thunder and Lightning are an adorable pair whose personalities are just as cute as their gorgeous floppy ears. These sweet boys are social, affectionate, and always ready to charm their way into your heart.

Both boys love human company and enjoy a good cuddle, gentle face pats, and quiet time with their people. Having been in rescue since just one week old, they’ve grown up knowing love, kindness, and are now ready to share that love with their forever family.

🏡 Their Perfect Home
Thunder and Lightning are searching for a home where they can continue living their best indoor lives, complete with plenty of space to explore, toys to keep their clever minds busy, and humans who are ready to spoil them with affection.

🩺 Adoption Information
• Vaccinations & microchips booked for January 13.
• Now accepting pre-adoption applications for meet and greets.
• Will return to rescue for desexing at 4 months of age.
• Official adoption paperwork will be completed once all vet work is finished.

We’re keen to find their forever humans as soon as they’re vaccinated, so they don’t have to wait any longer than necessary to start their new chapter in a loving home.

If you’re ready for twice the love, twice the cuteness, and a lifetime of bunny joy, then Thunder and Lightning might just be the perfect addition to your complete your family.

✨️Desexing prevents suffering before it begins✨️

Primrose and her kittens have been making incredible progress since arriving into care just days ago, and we truly believe they arrived just in time.

When they came to us, Primrose wasn’t eating or drinking enough to produce milk for her seven starving kittens. The smallest weighed under 80g and was dangerously dehydrated. We weren’t sure he’d survive the night.

With hands on support, he was able to latch and receive his mum’s milk, the best chance for his fragile little body. Thankfully, he’s now gaining weight and thriving. With regular meals, Primrose is also gaining weight and producing enough milk for all her babies.

Despite such a tough start, the kittens have begun opening their eyes, meaning they’re atleast 7 days old. This is why desexing matters. Unplanned litters often suffer long before help arrives. Desexing prevents unnecessary suffering and saves lives.

Thank you for supporting rescue and responsible pet ownership.
