Meet Kevin - The reason we do what we do.
This is the face that launched D-Wheels. Some of you may have had the pleasure of meeting The Boss, for those who haven’t, here’s a little backstory.
Part 1
Kevin began having mobility difficulties when he was around 10 years old. Nothing major, a limp, a wobble, an off day. He was always an extremely active dog, so we first thought he had injured himself chasing a ball (his favourite pastime). At first it was a bit of a puzzle as initial X-ray showed nothing. No one could pinpoint exactly where the issue was originating. We treated flare ups with pain relief and rest and life went on.
When he was almost 12, X-ray finally showed hip dysplasia and spondylosis in his lumbar region. A bit of pain relief and physiotherapy seemed to ease things. We also started hydrotherapy to build up his strength along with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. His exercise was limited to short walks and physio routines. No more ball chasing!
We finally had an answer, or so we thought. The problem came and went. Until the day it didn’t.
Things took a significant nose dive in 2020. He was now 12 years old and was quickly losing strength and coordination. We also noticed his ability to p*e was not great.
On the advice of our vet, we opted to try epidural steroid treatment. This was scheduled to be a course of three injections. The first injection produced a small improvement, the second offered no obvious relief for him. We were hesitant to put him through the third procedure, and still discussing options when he suddenly lost the ability to move his hind legs.
