Thirteen varieties of mushrooms available in our little market stall today. Two more to go and I think weโ€™ll be maxed out. (Not to mention an awful lot of mushroom compost). Of course Pioppino and Nameko are about to sell out and itโ€™s not even 7:30am. There are some varieties of mushrooms you just canโ€™t grow enough of to keep up with demand. (Itโ€™s a terrible problem to haveโ€ฆ ๐Ÿคช).

When we sell our mushrooms at the markets, these guys always tend to get left behind. Not always but definitely 95% of the time. But they are my absolute favourites to watch grow as they remind me of angel wings popping out of the grow bag and when it comes to taste these are the mushrooms I recommend when you just donโ€™t know what to choose. These are the best all round mushroom for taste and texture and although they may not look โ€˜weirdโ€™ like a Lionโ€™s Mane or as vibrant as a Pink Oyster, I will continue to grow and recommend them purely because of the softness they bring to my little tent and my market stall. Ladies and gentlemen, the angelic Snow White Oyster. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ„โ€๐ŸŸซ๐ŸคŽ

Weโ€™re now officially growing 14 types of mushrooms in our little tent and today 11 of them have reached their final destination. Our first market stall we had 4 varieties. Weโ€™ve come a long way in the last few months. ๐Ÿคฉ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿ„โ€๐ŸŸซ Killing it!!! ๐ŸŽ‰

With all the excitement on our Ivory Shimeji being harvested, Iโ€™ve neglected our other new addition. King Trumpets are also coming to the market this week. I adore the caps on these guys. It looks like marble. (This colour would make a great kitchen counter top donโ€™t you think? ๐Ÿ˜). The royalty has arrived! Long live the kings. ๐Ÿ„โ€๐ŸŸซ๐ŸคŽ

Ladies and gentlemen. Behold! The mushroom that has brought me to tears on more than one occasion in all its glory. This is an Ivory Shimeji mushroom. I have been trying to grow her since December of 2025 and today, on the 6th of May 2026, I have finally harvested my first bunch. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐ŸŽ‰ I swear all the mushrooms I grow have an attitude of โ€œcan you go the distance with me?โ€ and put me through my paces to see if I am dedicated to them. (Hand on my heart I feel it in the tent. The second I neglect or take them for granted that theyโ€™ll alway show up they pull back and either donโ€™t grow or slow right down and I miss my weekend target to sell at the market). The little dark lords do not mess around. You have to love them or they give you nothing. Signing off a happy camper. Ivory Shimeji just joined the gang. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ„โ€๐ŸŸซ

Ahhh yes. Our little dark lords hovering silently in between flora and fauna, living their best inconspicuous life whilst the tomatoes take all the flack. Well played tasty fungus, well played. ๐Ÿคช ๐Ÿ„โ€๐ŸŸซ

These guys have caused me so much stress over the last 3 months. Money (lots of it), time (lots of that too), energy and just pure determination have been poured into these guys only for contamination (industry way of saying mould) to take hold before they actually fruit. I have literally cried because of the failure rate on these guys. They are so sensitive that Iโ€™m almost reluctant to post this as they might get wind of my excitement and stall and then die. This is the furthest Iโ€™ve managed to get an Ivory Shimeji to. (You see the little clustering around the X? They are pins starting to form!!! ๐ŸŽ‰). Fingers, toes, legs - everything is crossed that these guys can go the distance and fulfil their lifelong journey of being eaten. ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿ„โ€๐ŸŸซ๐Ÿคฉ

As the mornings get a little colder and the sun takes a little longer to rise, we needed lightingโ€ฆ So of course, when youโ€™re working with mushrooms, the ONLY option for lighting is fairy lights. For what else will bring whimsy to mushrooms and a dark Sunday morning.
