One of the most important lessons dog breeding has taught me is that we should never become so focused on people that we stop looking at dogs.

It is easy to celebrate a result when it favors our friends, and just as easy to criticize it when it does not. But if we truly care about a breed, our first question should always be: What does this result reward?

Dog shows were never meant to be a competition between owners, breeders, or handlers. Their purpose is to identify and promote the dogs that best represent the breed standard and preserve the qualities that make the breed what it is.

For that reason, the most valuable skill is not learning how to win.

“It is learning how to recognize quality wherever it appears”.

To appreciate a good dog even when it belongs to someone we do not know, do not particularly like, or even compete against.

Because the future of a breed is not shaped by opinions, friendships, or rivalries. It is shaped by the dogs we choose to reward, promote, and breed from.

A ribbon lasts a day. The consequences of selection can last for generations.

That is why, as breeders and breed enthusiasts, we should always try to keep our eyes on the dogs, not on the people holding the lead.
