👮‍♀️⚖️100 years ago, the first RSPCA Inspector had no more power than an ordinary citizen - just determination to protect animals who couldn’t protect themselves.

That changed with the Animals Protection Act 1925, giving Inspectors the legal authority to act, powers that grew even stronger under today’s Animal Care and Protection Act 2001.

So, what does an RSPCA Inspector actually do now, beyond responding to cruelty reports? Watch our Inspectors explain what their job really involves 👀

04/11/2025

100 years of protecting animals 🐾❤️
This year marks a century since the Animals Protection Act 1925 - the law that first gave RSPCA Inspectors the power to protect animals from cruelty across Queensland ⚖️

A hundred years on, that mission remains as vital as ever. Just ask Aussie and Matilda 🐶💔

You might remember these 2 puppies from our call for information earlier this year. Deep in dense bushland, they were found abandoned, their mouths cruelly duct taped shut. It’s heartbreaking to imagine, but their story now has a beautiful ending.

When a caring member of the public raised the alarm, Inspector Chantel rushed to help. She was able to gently capture Aussie, the little boy, but his sister Matilda was too frightened to come close.

What happened next is something you won’t want to miss.

Watch the emotional moment Matilda finally trusts Chantel, and the incredible relief and joy of seeing these two siblings safely reunited.

Despite everything they endured, Aussie and Matilda were full of love, charming everyone they met. And the best part? They’ve both now found their forever homes 🏡❤️

From fragile to full of life 🐴❤️
When ex-racehorses and paddock mates, 8-year-old Big Red and 18-year-old senior lady Gidget, came to RSPCA they were severely underweight and Gidget was also suffering from a painful hoof and an old leg injury.

After vet care, lots of good feeds and plenty of love from their amazing foster carer, these two are now unrecognisable.

Gidget’s gentle soul shines brighter than ever, while Big Red’s playful side has truly galloped free - his post-bath zoomies around the paddock are a sight to behold!

❤️ Watch Big Red and Gidget’s heartwarming journey.

We’re thrilled that Gidget has found her forever home, now it’s Big Red’s turn. Could you give this lovable larrikin his happy ending? 🏡

119 flying foxes admitted to RSPCA Wildlife Hospital 🦇💔
Following severe weather and hail over the weekend, 119 flying foxes came into our care for treatment, many with critical injuries.

Our RSPCA Teams, alongside our amazing wildlife carers and rescue groups, are working around the clock to treat and care for our shadows of the night sky, and with storms continuing we expect to see even more in need of help.

🦇 Found an injured or sick flying fox?

☎️ Contact RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (264 625) or Bat Conservation & Rescue QLD for assistance.

‼️ Never attempt to handle a bat yourself as they can carry Australian Bat Lyssavirus, which if transmitted to humans, is deadly. Expert wildlife rescuers can assist in getting injured and sick flying foxes veterinary treatment as they are vaccinated and trained to appropriately handle our nocturnal pollinators 👉 bit.ly/4oKN0wT

The tiniest of patients ❤️
When Grape, a feathertail glider weighing in at barely 12 grams, arrived at RSPCA’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Eumundi, he was fragile, frightened, and badly injured - a tiny life hanging in the balance.

A suspected cat attack had left a painful wound on his back that needed careful cleaning and suturing 💔

Sadly, stories like Grape’s are heartbreakingly common, and without help, so many of our tiny native animals don’t survive.

Thanks to our dedicated wildlife vets and carers, little Grape has now recovered. And after some time spent in rehabilitation practicing his gliding and climbing with one of our incredible wildlife carers, he's now soaring back in the bush where he belongs ❤️

🚑 Grape is just one of over 27,000 native animals we see every year... and why we need your support.

Our dedicated wildlife and rescue teams work around the clock to save vulnerable and endangered animals. Their crucial work to save our precious wildlife is only possible thanks to community support and generous donations.

TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR PETS ARE SAFE
🏡 Create a safe and secure space for all of your animals
🐴 Watch out for debris, incoming waters and unsafe damage to surrounding properties
🐶 Don’t tether pets if outside - they may do themselves more harm trying to break free.
💧 Provide access to water and food in heavy bowls if outdoors.
🐱 Keep your pets (including cats) indoors.
📝 Take time to prepare a Disaster Pet Preparedness Plan for you and your pet if you need to evacuate👉 bit.ly/3wntFIE

👻 Boo!
Howl-o-ween's almost here, but let’s keep the scares fake and the animals safe 🐾🎃

Here’s how to make your spooky celebrations wildlife-friendly and pet-approved 👇

🕸️ Skip the spider webs: Those fake webs might look spooky, but they’re bad news for birds and bats who may ingest the synthetic fibres, become entangled or try lining their nests with them. Keep it indoors or skip it altogether to protect our native friends.

🦴 Decorate with care: Little plastic props or tinsel bits can be tempting chew toys (and dangerous choking hazards). Keep them out of paw’s reach!

🍫 No tricks, no treats: Chocolate and lollies are toxic to pets. Keep the tempting treat bowl from being sniffed out and clean up any stray wrappers.

🎭 Keep costumes comfy: If your pet’s dressing up, make sure they can move freely, stay cool and are supervised. Keep outfits short-lived and fun, never forced. If they look stressed, skip the outfit.

Let’s make this Halloween fun while avoiding those real-life scares for pets and wildlife 👻🎃

GOOSIES BOWLS CLUB JOINS RSPCA’S GROWING RECYCLING MISSION ON 1ST ANNIVERSARY👏🏻🎉

“GOOSIES AND PAWS UNITE”
In a heartwarming collaboration the RSPCA and Gooseponds Sport and Recreation Club are joining forces to raise vital funds for animal care and welfare in the region. A couple of months ago club officials were approached with a proposal by Rob Hobbs, RSPCA volunteer and advocate for Recycling and Containers for Change to pledge future refundable containers to the RSPCA 🐾

After thoughtful consideration, the Board officially approved the proposal. Notifying Rob of that decision during last Friday's bowls. Michael Newton, the newly appointed club manager, expressed full support for the initiative.
“The club and the team members are right behind the initiative and look forward to working with the RSPCA. It's a great way for us to give back to both the community and the environment”.

Nestled alongside the serene Gooseponds in north Mackay, Goosies is known not just for its sport but for its community spirit. This new initiative reflects the club’s ongoing commitment to giving back - both to the members and the community. “Goosies, as it’s affectionately known, offers an impressive range of facilities”. Including two undercover bowls greens (for all weather playing), gaming room, private function rooms, bingo and trivia nights, live music and fantastic meals. The club now has a pick-up and drop- off service with their new courtesy bus allowing guests to totally relax and not worry about driving.
So when looking for your next entertainment hub for a meal or cool drink head on down to goosies 🪿

Let’s support those who support the animals and the RSPCA and remember the club is taking bookings for your Christmas parties now too 🎄🎅🏻

Hi there!
I'm Josie, a young, sweet soul who loves to play and show my limitless amounts of energy. I'm a super friendly girl, and I love making new friends here at the shelter, however I can be a bit shy around other dogs at first, but once I warm up, we're the best of friends. I would love for my new home to be an active family, who can take me on lots of adventures! I wouldn't mind sharing the love at the house if you have another dog! We just need to meet to make sure we're a match! Because of my high energy, I would be best suited to a family with older children. If you're looking for a loyal companion, I'm your girl! Let's make beautiful memories together! Come down and meet me at the shelter!

Hi! I'm Cheeseburger!
I'm still a young guy whose got plenty of energy to spare! I love going for my walks, I can be a bit silly and pull a bit but I'm slowly learning so I'll need someone who can continue my training so I can be the best boy around! I love to tell everyone about my life like a typical husky, so you'll have to be prepared for me to talk your ear off! I'm still learning my manners around other dogs so I'd either be a great solo dog or if you have a tolerant female dog that can show me the ropes then I'd love to meet her first! Because of my adorable silly nature, I might be too much for little kids, so id need to go to a home with older ones please! I can get a bit stressed when I'm left by myself so I would prefer a home where my people are around a lot! So, if you have the patience to keep teaching me to be a good boy and the energy to keep up with me then come meet me today!

Hey there my name is Kai,
I am a sweet gentle natured guy, who is just a big ol' sook! I love all the lady dogs I meet and am very polite and calm, and if the boy dog isn't too full on and rude I am fine with them too. A home with kids 8+ might be best as I am a larger boy and may accidently knock little ones over. I am known to be a drama king when I am alone sometimes, so a home where someone is there more often than not may be preferable. I could go to a home with or without a doggy companion but if you have a dog a meet and greet is essential. If you choose me I will be your most loyal sooky baby boy, so all you need to do is come and meet me!

Hello, My name is Mishka!
I am an elderly gentleman looking for my retirement home. I am a very sweet and affectionate man, but the love has to be on my own terms. Because of this I would not be suitable for a home with young children. I haven't been reactive to other cats at the shelter, and my previous home had another cat so staff believe with proper introductions I can go to a home with a kitty pal for me. I am a very low maintenance kind of guy, I would love a home that has a warm lap I can curl up on at night while you watch TV and maybe snuggle in bed with you, and a sun beam to sleep in during the day. Food is the way to my heart, if you have a good treat, I will be your best friend!
Come and meet me soon!

Hello my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my..... wait... that's not right...
My name is Montoya and I love you! I am looking for a new home that will help me recover from my wandering ways by letting me be your indoor baby or having a catio I can spend my days in. I am a gentle and smoochy boy who loves a good head scratch. I haven't spent much time with other cats at the shelter but staff think I could be rehomed with another cat as long as introductions are done correctly. I was a little shy at first when coming to the shelter but I came out of my shell quickly, so I would love for my new people to be old enough to understand I may need some space when I first come home but once I am settled in I will be your bestest buddy.
Come meet me today!

Hi! I'm Crumble! The staff were a bit confused and named me and my siblings after a Thanksgiving meal, even though we are Australian and Thanksgiving isn't until November! This team are famous for weird names though, so we can't be surprised.
I'm just a puppy, but I'm already a big girl! I'm full curiosity, I enjoy going for a walk and exploring every nook and cranny. I can be pretty playful, I spent some time in foster with my sister, and boy, do we play rough, but I'm always gentle and chill afterward, ready for a cozy nap! But I'm really just a chill girl at heart, who wants to laze around with you and go on gentle walks. I am still a pup though so you will need to continue my training so that I can be the bestest girl! I'd be happy to live with another dog so if you have another doggo then I'd love to meet them first! So, if you think we make a perfect match then come meet me today!

I love to romp around and play games, especially if they involve a bit of roughhousing, my sister and I get up to lots of mischief! I'm also quite the foodie - treats are the way to my heart! Despite my playful side, I'm really sweet and mellow too, although a little goofy sometimes! I enjoy making new friends and am always up for a cuddle or a gentle pat, but I am a big girl, so you'll have to be prepared for me to take up half the bed! 18/10/2025

Hey there, my name is Cranberry. Just like the berry I can be a bit tart and sour. I came into care with my 4 young babies after giving birth under a house, I was an amazing mother and now I am ready for my own home. I was living on the street for a long time and so I don't really know how to trust people. I need a home where my people are very cat savvy and will give me the time and space I need to trust you. The way to my heart is food and I forgive most indiscretions if you give me a good treat afterwards. My new home will have a crash pad ready for me, as having access to a whole house will be to much right away. No young children but if your existing cat is calm and easy going I could handle that.
I know I am not the easiest kitty to love but staff say they can see my beautiful soul under the fear and I will make a great companion to the right person. Are you that person willing to give me a chance?
