These Wagyu heifers getting good behaviour imprinted early so they don’t become trouble down the track, a good excuse to let everyone out of the cages to blow some steam out. Overstaffed but good exercise for Deppeler’s Ace & Alba, Next Step Otto & Rosie, Millanda Luna, Grassvalley Fifi and Holly

Made the long trip up to Melrose over the weekend for my first crack at a utility trial.

Highlight was young Deppelers Ace having an absolute field day, scoring the highest in the minor round of the novice (would’ve run decently in the final if it wasn’t for his idiot handler forgetting half the yard section), winning the award for best cast, lift and draw, winning the highest score for a south Australian novice dog and then going on to place 11th in the open, just shy of finals against some of the best in the sport. Proud as punch of the young fella

Cheers to all who organised and ran it, fantastic weekend away 🍺

Holly and Deppler’s Alba assisting with movement of a bull who worked out his turning circle was a lot better than the 4 wheelers. My favourite pair of dogs to work, just doing enough for the job. Pretty cold morning for wet socks sorry dogs!

Some pre lamb drench packing with Deppelers Ace, handy fella this one

A rainy arvo education session on some Wagyu heifers.

I’m a big believer on giving young dogs an opportunity at real work with assistance from older dogs provided they’re not being detrimental to the job at hand or chasing dogs instead of working. A good confidence builder and a step between the trainer pen and real work.

The jobs easily handled by a couple of dogs but giving the young ones a go as well makes them feel like they’re contributing and doing real work. They come off feeling like champions and are itching to get back into it next time

Next Step Otto and Next Step Rosie’s first look at cattle at 9 months old and first time working more than half a dozen sheep, very happy with how they went! Will be hard to make a choice as to who stays
