🦷 Why Are Dentals Important for Young Horses?🐴
Your horse’s dental health starts to matter well before they’re “old enough” for regular riding or work. A recent visit (photo below) highlights this significance. The image shows the collection of extracted wolf teeth, caps and cap fragments from one day. It takes a good setup, appropriate sedation and time to identify and remove these appropriately. These youngsters are now set up for success.
👉 Young horses are constantly shedding baby teeth (caps) between the ages of 2–5 years. If these caps don’t shed appropriately, they can cause pain, ulceration, and training issues.
👉 Wolf teeth (small premolars) can also interfere with the bit and should be assessed early.
👉 Regular dental checks mean we can identify and address problems before they affect your horse’s comfort, behaviour, and long-term health.
💡 Even if your youngster isn’t in work yet, a dental examination ensures they’re pain-free, eating well, and set up for a healthy future.
