ADOPTION INFO
Due to an increase in messages to the rattery, I wanted to give some information on how to be considered for adopting with Smelly Rats. I have had dozens of messages in recent weeks but only 1 single application.
My rats, whether rescued or bred by me will ONLY go to people who have completed the following steps:
- Filled out my ‘Expression of Interest’ form, either before messaging or after i have suggested you do so. Not filling out this form shows a lack of follow through. If you would like a cheap rat that you can pick up today, you are welcome to check out Gumtree.
- Emailed or messaged me cage photos. I will never home a rat without seeing what their living conditions will be. I am happy to help people improve their cages to a healthier standard but you will not recieve rats until that standard is met.
-DO YOUR RESEARCH. I work a full time job as well as run my own two part business, unfortunately i cannot hold everyones hand as they navigate proper rat care. We all have to learn! I had my first rats once too! I am always happy to make recommendations, answer questions and help out but i will always want to choose a more knowledgeable home for my rats over a riskier one.
- Show an interest in my rattery and the types of rats i breed. Often people are no longer interested in my rats after i describe the coats i breed. Its fine to want a certain colour or coat! But you want a plush curly male double rex velour who looks like a teddy bear? Be ready for him to have a naked rump when hes older!
You should always be vetting breeders before you adopt from them. Ask about my ethics, my breeding practices, my culling procedures, i most certainly would be asking those things!
Additional things you can do to be considered for adoption but not 100% necessary:
- Come to shows and meet me and my rats. I attend every single Queensland Rodent Fanciers show as well as many other community events with my rats. Show an interest in us and I’ll remember you when im looking for homes.
- Show me your love of rats! Send photos! Tell me their dumb names! I want my rats with people who love and adore them. Id pick someone sending me 20 photos a day over someone who never spoke to me again after adoption.
I have worked professionally in the animal industry for many years and have navigated the world of animal husbandry, breeding and sales. I have seen the good and the bad of it. I will always advocate for my rats to have the best life. I love them more than anything ♥️
Thankyou to all of those who have adopted with us already and fill my rats lives with love every single day ♥️
