Cool Canines

Cool Canines I love helping people and their dogs. Showing you how to become amazing teams, where you work together and help your dog be the best they can.

I do this using the most human methods as recommended by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. It states that not only should methods be effective but also kind and consider the well-being of the animal. I will show you how we can use positive reinforcement, games, working with the why of the dogs behaviour can make the best change in both us and our dogs behaviour. I will not shame

you or judge, I will educate you and show you what I know. Hopefully you will then no longer need me, but hopefully still come to class for fun!

Have you seen these beautiful snow gums in our grounds. Have you wondered their significance? Pop in and take a look inside the enclosure. There you will see a monument to commemorate a local community member Michael Norton O.A.M who was a duel gold medalist at the 1994 winter Para- Olympics

When we have a dog who is not the biggest fan of strange dogs approaching, especially on leash, it can be really overwhelming for everyone when a lose dog starts to approach. So I wrote out some (a little tongue-in-cheek) suggestions for ways to manage those situations and buy yourself time to escape the scenario.

Training Tuesday
Another dog at the vet because he has eaten a sock (or any other object).
This happens when the dog feels that the only safe place for a treasured object is their stomach.
Prevention is so much better than cure:
• Stop taking things away from your puppy – exchange instead!
• Once they feel safe and exchange, teach a solid 'leave-it' cue.
• Stop chasing your puppy when they have something you do not want them to have – teach them to bring it back! (unless it is a real emergency)
• Stop messing with your puppy’s food – let them eat in peace.

This week's blog post looks at some of the unintended (and unwanted) side effects of using aversive dog training methods such as prong and shock collars and leash "corrections". If you missed it, you'll find the article on my blog.

Sometimes we have to deliver medicine for our dogs.
So after impressing the vet practise the other day with Vaders ability to take them, I thought I would show some versions of how we give Vader his medicine.

Option 1) Put it in something super tasty.
To be fair, Vader thinks all foods are amazing, so this won't work for our fussy eaters.
Option 2) Make a game of it
Playing catch often has helped with this one, Vader is too keen for the next catch to worry too much about what is currently in his mouth. Rolling food can help with this too.

This will work for many dogs, equally there will be dogs who still turn there nose up. Thats ok! I have quite a few different tricks to help our doggos have what they need without creating an unpleasant experience!

What tricks do you use?
