The teenagers of the family, locked up and getting ready for bed last night. Baffles me they don’t go into the very well set up dark room and would rather roost outside so added more places for them to sleep rather than huddled in the corner.

Yesterday we set out to get the chickens some food and treats, and upgrade our self waterers/feeders to make Evie’s job a little lighter, but we also got the opportunity to take in 2 much loved chickens (well chooks) from a beautiful family who were renting, after a change in agents they no longer were allowed to keep them, and reached out in a poultry group, reading her add broke my heart and knew we had to help. ‘Rexxy & Fluffy’ (original names) have settled well in their new environment, and the laying ladies have welcomed them with open wings 🥰 I can’t wait for her kids to come down and visit them whenever they like. 💜

It’s getting rather dry here in Lara, Vic so wanted to show you how we make sure our laying ladies have greens at all times, even in their runs. We planted Barley and wheat seeds under some wire so they can only enjoy the green goodness when it Grows high enough to get through the wire. They get daily scraps and a high protein source of feed but what a great idea, I saw on a fb reel and wanted to share. (Sorry don’t have the name to credit but the idea is everywhere) They also enjoy the daily water mister that comes on to water the picking patch as a I like to call it 💜

Also added some fake turf under a shade cloth for a safe place to hang out.

* If anyone knows where I can get bulk mealworms, pine shavings and best price chicken food in the area would love to know. Geelong / Lara. Also share your ideas in keeping your chickens cool and healthy in this hot Victorian weather atm. (Apparently bringing them inside isn’t an option 🤣🫣🤪)

* Any food scrap/ bread donations always welcome here* we have enough egg cartons thank you all for your kind donations.
