Alright. Hold onto your knickers while I rant for a moment 🤣

Feather pecking.
No it isn’t normal, it isn’t ok, it is preventable and it’s absolutely just lazy ownership to allow it or uneducated, which I guess isn’t so bad coz when you know better you should do better.

So what is it!? It’s when one or more of your flock peck at another chicken, removing feathers, ultimately to get the blood from the other animal. They’re savages, but they do it for a reason.
Usually over crowding in young birds. Or a lack of nutrition/protein in older birds.

So let’s say you see it beginning on one of your birds. I’d use cetrigen (purple spray), or even betadine to cover the naked area. Then you need to figure out why. Is it one hen being an ar****le? Does she need to move into a different group? Is she lacking? It there not enough space? Are they stressed?
Do they have food all the time? Are you missing something?- this is where you observe and act.

I’m well aware that not everyone is as… let’s say invested as I am in my birds but it’s an easy, usually human caused problem that’s I’m definitely not onboard with normalising in the poultry world.

Anyway. Sorry I’m not sorry.
I don’t have a photo example because I don’t have feather pecked birds but here’s a photo of Nanna to represent how I feel about the subject 🤣🫣

Early start this morning to make sure everyone we moved into growout pens yesterday was using their shelters and not utilising a cuddle puddle in the rain to keep warm.

Harry from Harry & Rosie the Havanese is here at the moment (Rosie is too but she’s keeping the kids company in bed, an important and much warmer job) and he wasn’t feeling too brave to begin with in the dark, with the wind and the rain! My little Velcro sidekick ❤️🤣

Didn’t take him long to get into the groove chasing the kelpies though, he is one of the little brown blobs running in the distance in the second photo 👌 🏃‍♂️

Goliath the Gate Keeper ❤️

He was raised (& named) by a friend, from my chicks last season, and I knew as soon as I saw him I wanted him for the girls this year!

He is huge, but gosh he has an amazing temperament. He got to meet his ladies for this season yesterday & he was of course a total gentleman. Cannot wait to hatch his babies 🤞🏻

Roosters move at night 🌙

I do all my rooster moving at night. Why? Simple really, no rooster fights.

Everyone who talks to me knows I’m A backup rooster kinda gal, I never have one rooster, I have two in each pen, and atleast 1 spare in my big rooster pen. And I don’t have any issues with this. Ever.
I added boys to the rooster pen in the darkness last night, I stay while they get up on their perches and settled in under torch light. Then this morning when I head out, it’s an even playing field. No fights or arguments coz they all wake up together and there’s no “meeting” or “intruder” situation.

Anyway. That’s how I do it. Roosters make or break your breeding, they aren’t an after thought, they are very important & if moving them at night means low stress (although Stanley in the photo looks a bit pi**ed at me) & no fights. I’m all for the night shift!

Heading into the weekend, we are expecting some pretty sh*tty weather.

So whilst I have an insane amount of pullets in my grow out pens… you know, cream legbars, olive eggers, Wyandottes, Brahma, buff orpingtons, duccles… yeah let’s go with that for now. I haven’t sorted them, and I’m not going to for a few weeks so they’re not available yet….

If you’re after week old layer chicks, I still have a few. The isa browns, white leghorns, australorp hybrids…

Still focusing on building new coops, and getting everyone settled in & then I can start introducing all our newcomers for this season! ❤️😆🫣

Quality control in the partridge Wyandottes pen is clearly lacking 🤣 Someone trusted a fart 😆🤦🏻‍♀️🫣🤪

Then VS Now ❤️

Photo on the left is August 2024, my general contractor had just finished what I thought was all the chicken coops I needed… that later grew to an additional 9 being added 🫣

Right photo is today, a bittersweet day, the last of the yards have come down, been dismantled and ready to go off to the scrap yard.
It’s an end of one chapter and the beginning of what is looking to be a massive 2026/27 and more seasons to come! 🥳

New setup reveal pending 🫣🤣❤️
