Many clients ask “what should I expect at my horses dental appointment?” Here’s a quick explanation 👇🏻
First of all- GOOD HORSEMANSHIP!! An equal first is communication,education and explanation to you; the client 😊 As I don’t use sedation, a good understanding of horsemanship is imperative to ensure your horse has a great experience at his appointment! Decades as a professional rider, trainer, breaker and coach means that even horses who have never even been bridled can easily be treated if handled correctly.
I begin by an external evaluation of the horse over all, with particular focus on any obvious abnormality/asymmetry around the head and jaw. 👀
I examine the entire mouth; soft tissue, incisors, molars and the jaw's movement for any changes that may indicate underlying disease or problems.
I undertake examination of each tooth and its surfaces using dental mirrors, lights and an oral endoscope. I look for ulcers, foreign bodies, injury and examine between the teeth for feed packing and periodontal disease; removing any packed feed.
I then perform filling to reduce sharp enamel points, address overgrowths, and improve chewing function. Subtle adjustments can catch small problems early and prevent more serious problems.
For ridden horses, I also pay close attention to areas affected by the bit, and then do a final assessment to ensure we have treated all areas of the mouth.
A full dental chart, detailed notes, recommendations, and any imagery are kept on file; and can be forwarded to the client at their request.
If an issue is found that needs further investigation or treatment and is outside of my scope; there are several veterinarians whom I work closely with to get the best outcome possible.
