One of the Neutrog team recently moved into a rental with a very tired “patch”, with some pretty compacted soil and a crop of weeds.

The area is around 4m x 1.5m and sits along a fence with a lot of sun. Some solid work with a garden fork, a bale of CHOCKABLOK and some GOGO Juice was the first step.

Despite being very excited to get planting, she left it a week, allowing the nutrients in CHOCAKBLOK to ‘settle’ in and for the microbes in GOGO Juice to get to work in the soil.

Into the garden went three types of cherry tomatoes, some lettuce, strawberries, squash, zucchini, basil and dill. A bale of Whoflungdung was spread around – leaving plenty of room for water.

Four weeks after planting a handful of Gyganic went around each plant.

“As a child, faced with a squash on my plate, I’d be horrified! Now, opening up those plants to see all those bright yellow squash, I was am so excited.

We talk a lot about each of our products building upon one another to give a great result, but there is something about the way I have seen this bed transform, has really brought that home.”

A project between the Neutrog R&D Team and orchid growers around Australia to develop the next generation of Strike Back for Orchids is well underway.

After an update to the formula in 2021 that focused on sick plants and finding microbes that could counteract pathogens, our team have turned their attention healthy orchids and finding the microbes that enable them to perform at their best.

With help from orchid growers and societies across Australia, we have collected samples of orchids considered to be outstanding examples of their species. These samples are then processed in the Neutrog laboratory, laying the groundwork for the most biologically advanced generation of Strike Back for Orchids yet.

You can read more about this exciting project in detail on our website: https://neutrog.com.au/next-generation-in-development-for-strike-back-for-orchids/

We would like to thank all of the groups who have been involved in this project so far: Cymbidium Orchid Club of South Australia, Cymbidium Orchid Society of Victoria, Cymbidium Orchid Club of Western Australia, Cymbidium Club of Australia NSW Inc., The Orchid Club of South Australia Inc and the Orchid Society of Western Australia

South Australian Antibiotic Resistance Research Goes Global

A joint study between the University of South Australia and Neutrog has uncovered the incredible potential of soil microbes to help combat antibiotic resistance which is a growing threat to both human and animal health worldwide.

After promising early results, an Australian Research Council grant of $500,000 has been awarded to take the work even further, aiming to pinpoint “super-charged” microbes that could offer a natural, sustainable alternative to antibiotics in intensive farming.

The project has also attracted international attention, with leading scientist Professor Dan Staerk from the University of Copenhagen joining the collaboration.

With antibiotic resistance listed by the World Health Organization as one of the top public health threats facing humanity, this research could be a major step forward.

Our commercial team recently visited one of South Australia’s commercial cucumber operations, where 10,000 plants are currently being grown as part of a dedicated trial site.

Alongside their standard nutrition program, the grower has incorporated two applications of GOGO Juice and one application of POPUL8, each delivered at 5L per hectare.

Following the second application of GOGO Juice, the team were already back in the next day re-wrapping vines.

While the cucumber variety being trialled is new to the farm, it is performing exceptionally well under the current regime. The grower is using this 10,000-plant greenhouse as a testing ground before scaling the program across their remaining 350,000 plants in neighbouring houses.

In our most recent newsletter, we connected with the owners of Highcroft Garden , who generously shared the story of their remarkable two-acre property and its journey through drought, fire and recovery.

Set on a working Red Angus cattle stud in the eastern Adelaide Hills, Highcroft has been transformed over 14 years into a thriving garden despite some of the region’s toughest conditions. With average annual rainfall of just 550mm, and barely half of that falling in the past two years, water has been a constant challenge. Irregular rainfall and drying dams meant the garden had to be established without reliable irrigation, prompting a focus on drought-tolerant and Mediterranean-style plantings.

Nature continued to test the garden’s resilience. The Cudlee Creek bushfires destroyed a third of the property five years ago, followed by some of the driest years on record, including a 14-month period without irrigation.

Despite this, Highcroft’s recovery has been extraordinary. With perseverance, thoughtful management and the support of biological inputs such as Seamungus and GOGO Juice, much of the garden has bounced back. As owner Maureen puts it simply, “Neutrog saved my garden.”

Sterculia quadrifida, or more commonly known at the peanut tree or red-fruited kurrajong, is a small tree that grows in the rainforests, vine thickets and gallery forests of New Guinea and northern Australia.

In summer, small, fragrant cream white flowers appear, followed by hard green seed pods. These pods are the tree’s main feature, turning a vibrant red/orange colour when ready to harvest in late spring and summer. Inside the pods are edible black seeds which have a pleasant peanut flavour when eaten raw or roasted.

The bark and the leaves of the tree were also used by Indigenous Australians for weaving. It was also a medicinal tree, with the leaves used to treat skin wounds and stings.

For the best results, Sterculia quadrifida should be planted in a full sun position in a well-drained soil, although it does grow well in infertile, sandy and rocky soils as well. It prefers sub-tropical or Mediterranean conditions, which is why it is widely distributed around Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, and south to north eastern New South Wales.

Water regularly, apply a protective layer of Whoflungdung, and feed twice a year with Bush Tucker.

At Neutrog, we love seeing our products put to the test in all sorts of unexpected ways, and sometimes the best trials happen by accident.

After refreshing her garden beds, one of our team members found herself with half a bale of CHOCKABLOK left over. Rather than let it sit, she tossed it across a section of her lawn that had been looking a little tired. Positioned right beside a large eucalyptus, the grass had long struggled for colour and consistency.

With no real plan (and admittedly not much attention to where it landed), she simply watered it in and went about her week. Three weeks later, she wandered out to check on things and was stunned. The patch where CHOCKABLOK had been scattered was now a noticeably deeper, lusher green than the rest of the lawn.

A happy reminder that our products can work wonders in all kinds of surprising places.

As spring settles in and summer approaches, the lawns near the National Rose Trial Garden at the Adelaide Botanic Garden have been refreshed to keep them looking their best.

Lawns adjacent to the The National Rose Trial Garden of Australia Inc. were fed with Sudden Impact for Lawns to encourage strong, even growth, while other lawn areas across the gardens have been scarified and cored before applying Seamungus Lawns to improve soil condition and support long-term turf health.

With these spaces enjoyed by thousands of visitors throughout the warmer months, giving the lawns some extra care now helps ensure they stay lush, resilient and welcoming right through summer.

A collaborative trial is currently underway in Western Australia, designed to explore how enhancing soil microbiology may help inhibit Phytophthora in avocado production.

The study, conducted by a Western Australian university, aims to better understand if building a stronger, more diverse soil microbiome can improve plant resilience against disease.

To ensure the conditions were as realistic as possible, avocado plants were established in grow bags in the field using soil sourced directly from an avocado orchard. Over a six-month period, the plants were treated with POPUL8 alongside other products.

After six months, the plants were lifted and transferred back to the university, where they were acclimatized and prepared for inoculation with Phytophthora. Monitoring and testing will continue as the trial progresses.

This research will provide valuable insights into the role of soil biology in protecting avocado crops from Phytophthora and improving long-term orchard health.

Our Story

About Neutrog - formed in 1988 and based at Kanmantoo, 60kms south east of Adelaide, the Neutrog factory site covers an area of some 20 hectares and employs over 50 people.

Neutrog’s name was born from the combination of ‘nutrients’ and ‘organics’ to accurately reflect the true nature of the products manufactured, which is a range of ACO certified organic products, along with specialist organic-based, chemically-boosted fertilisers, liquid probiotics and our supermulch Whoflungdung.

As a company, Neutrog is only at the beginning of its biological evolution, but we are already manufacturing novel and imaginative products that have never been made – ones that are more microbiologically diverse, making them more robust and adaptable, and more tolerant to drought, heat and frost.

For us, Quality Control and Safety Assurance are critical components of products that perform day in day out. As well as nutrient content and microbiological diversity, our fertilisers are tested for pesticides, fungicides, heavy metals and pathogenic bacteria that are harmful to humans.
