I’m getting a little bit excited over here! 🤭🥚

For the past two nights, I’ve found a very different pullet egg in the nest box. Unlike the others, this one has a lovely matte finish rather than the usual glossy shell.

With only two pullets left yet to reveal themselves as layers, I’m going to hazard an educated guess that this may just be Odette’s handiwork. 👀

Of course, as any breeder knows, the girls like to keep us guessing, so I won’t know for certain just yet. Thankfully, I should get my answer one way or another from Thursday night when Odette is crated up to get show ready. If the mystery egg suddenly appears in her crate, I may have my culprit! 😆

I’m trying not to get ahead of myself, but I have everything crossed that it is her. I’ve been very keen to see what she decides to produce, and these first few eggs are always an exciting milestone.

Now, fingers crossed she continues to grace me with the goods and doesn’t decide that laying eggs is optional once she’s worked out I’m paying attention! 😂🐓🥚✨

Soooo… I may have entered Odette and Grégoire in TWO shows this weekend. 😅

Which, of course, meant it was time to stop talking about getting my show and quarantine crates sorted and actually do it!

I’m happy to report that the first 2 of the planned 4 crates are officially ready for duty as holding, training and quarantine crates. 💪

Nothing fancy here—just good old Kmart medium-sized collapsible wire crates. One was generously gifted to me, and the other I bought new. Add a handful of zip ties, some shade cloth to help keep the bedding where it belongs (instead of all over the floor), and we’re in business.

The current covers are very much a temporary solution. The long-term plan is to make proper canvas covers to help cut the wind. My undercover area has all the charm of a wind tunnel some days, and I’m pretty sure the birds didn’t sign up for that. 😂

The upside is that now I have two crates assembled, I can finally start taking measurements and work out the frame design for the full setup—four crates in total, stacked two up and two down. One step at a time!

I often joke that half of this breeding adventure is learning as I go, but that’s really the truth. Every project starts with an idea, a bit of problem-solving, and sometimes a healthy amount of trial and error. The important thing is just getting started and building on it as you learn.

So, two crates down, two to go, canvas covers to sew, a frame to build, and a couple of birds to get show-ready. I’d call that progress! 😊🐓✨

Now to see what other “simple little project” I accidentally create for myself next… 😆

I have been hiding this fella away in my cockerel grow out pen. I put him in the pen a couple of months ago and thought he was only freezer worthy.
Today I let the 5 boys out to free range and was quite surprised to see the change in this fella. I might have to change my freezer worthy thoughts on this boy. 🤔

Aarrggh I love the rain but not when it turns the grow out pen into a swamp and the grow out into swamp Donkeys. Today I battled the mud, dug trenches, spread Potash and Dolomite lime and paid a kidney for bu**er all Pine Bark chip. - fyi won’t be going back there!
Any who, the grow out pen is much better now 😆🙄

I am after wood ash again this winter and lots of it!!!!!
Instead of throwing it out, if I supply you with a bucket and lid, could I prevail on you to keep it for me. I can collect when the bucket is full! I use it in my chook pens during winter and don’t produce anywhere near enough myself. It helps with the wet and keeping Coccidiosis at bay which can flourish in the wet weather. The chooks also LOVE it to dust bath in it and eat the charcoal.
Thank you 🙏

Up close and personal day in the pens today and honestly… some of these birds know exactly how to make me stop and stare 😆

This little lady in particular is one I am trying very hard not to crow too loudly about just yet, but she is shaping up to be something pretty special. Dare I say it… she may even end up better than Odette 👀

I am very partial to a really good Blue Copper, especially when they develop that deep, rich oxidised copper colouring, and this girl is starting to show exactly that.

Today she had her leg bands updated so I can keep her properly tracked. She has officially outgrown her second set and graduated into her adult bands now. Blue on one leg, yellow on the other — sire and dam colours to make identification easier.

Of course, changing bands also meant I got the chance to really go over her properly up close and personal and OH MY GOD 🤯

From a distance, you don’t always notice how much they are developing day to day, but once I had her in my hands and the light hit her properly… wow. The copper coming through on this little thing is absolutely stunning.

Needless to say, I am super, super happy with how she is maturing 😊

This lovely girl is Anton’ part sister — sired by Gerard and out of Blueberry. She was a 2024 hatch and will be heading into a breeding pen with Greggy this season.

What I am really hoping for from this pairing is an increase in the depth and richness of copper of Greggy, while he has the amount of copper. She carries a beautifully dark overall tone, complemented by those striking dark copper eyebrows that I am particularly fond of.

As with any breeding bird, there are always traits we are aiming to improve. The main thing I would like to refine in her is the slightly “bustle-like” feathering through the rear. Thankfully, Greggy is exceptionally clean and tight feathered, so in theory he should help balance that fault while hopefully enhancing and intensifying the amount of copper colouration in the offspring.

That is always the fascinating part of breeding — pairing birds together with a goal in mind, trying to strengthen the positives while steadily improving on the weaknesses over time. Fingers crossed this pairing gives me exactly what I am hoping for 🤞🏻

A little something different today and sharing purely for educational (and slightly chicken obsessed 😆) purposes!

We have all met Mr Grégoire… aka Greggy Eggy & Odette, but now it’s time to meet their brother. Same sire, same line, same hatch… and yet TOTALLY different in colour and presentation. Genetics really are wild sometimes!

This handsome blue fellow is missing every trace of copper you could possibly imagine! Even Blue ear feather 😆 Yet somehow he is still absolutely stunning in his own way. Where Greggy & Odette are loaded with copper, this boy has gone the complete opposite direction with that gorgeous clean blue colouring, darker blue hackles and soft lighter blue body and Blue ear feather.

Mum is Blueberry, who looks almost identical to this blue boy, and sire is Anton. It’s always fascinating seeing what combinations pop out when you put certain lines together. You can have siblings that look like they came from completely different breeding

Honestly, I wish I had the room to keep this fellow and have a play with developing a solid blue line with the darker hackle colouring and lighter blue body tone. I think it could make for a really striking project line. Maybe next season I’ll have to make it another little side experiment 😆

This is the boy I was telling you about Jose!
