Pen number 2 fenced today. Only 2 more to go. The grow out pen and the other Marans Pen. I have run out of wire and mesh clips 😔 Will be a couple of weeks before I can squirrel away the money for more wire and another bundle of droppers.
Oh and un upside down pullet! Silly girl just happily laid there, on her back watching me. 🙈😆

Aaahh poo! 💩 I have been not so patiently waiting for last seasons pullets to start giving up the goods. Others who have had eggs off me last season are getting really good colour that I was sooo happy with. Me? meh, 1st egg a 3 if I’m lucky - middle egg. The eggs either side are from my Blue Coppers that I bred from last season who are still sporadically giving me an egg every couple of days. I have 5 more pullets to come on the lay and sincerely hope this girl’s ink jets come on line or she will end up in the Homesteader layers pen 😭 considering it’s her 1st egg, I will date it and keep it in a separate carton and track the colour process. 🙄

Gerard Depardieu. I love this cockerel Such a lovely nature.
He is still lacking some feather especially around his hackle. He has good lines, part Phil Thomas line and part Pip and Grow (Hanna’s) and he comes from really good egg colour. I was lucky to be gifted a dozen eggs and he was 1 or 2 that hatched (I was aware the hatch rate would not be good at the time) and was just very lucky to hatch this fellow. I can’t wait to see what I get his season. He will be put back over his daughters from last season that I have kept. I am only small and limited space so I am selective with what I keep.
Never be afraid to ask questions and learn. Never be afraid to reach out and never be afraid to trust what you have learnt or your eye (mine can be so totally off sometimes 🙈)
There are some breeders that I admire and aspire to emulate and learn from.

I have a couple, solid Blue Copper Marans girls I bred 2 seasons ago. I kept them because 1. I like the solid blue’s and 2. They lay a lovely dark egg. A regular 4 on the French Marans club chart. I thought I would take some pic’s of them today while they were out and about after all the rain we have had in the past 2 days. There are 3 girls. 1 has slight, deep, rich copper low by her wattles and the other 2 have none at all. I would rather be in the ‘lacking copper’ situation and having great egg colour than the other way round. The copper I can be selective and breed in. The egg colour is a much longer process.

They are all puffed and fluffed up due to the wind and cold and still missing some tail feather

Wood ash or Potash.
It’s that time of year again when those of us with wood heaters have a weekly amount that needs to be disposed of.
Don’t bin it!! It’s amazing for your poultry.
I dump mine twice a week out in the chook yards.
What it’s good for:
* absorbs water and odours
* Anti-parasitic: helps control mites, lice and other parasites.
* mineral supplement: Calcium, magnesium & potassium.
* Coccidiosis: the charcoal is a natural prevention and remedy of coccidiosis.
* also its great for cleaning their feathers.

So don’t dispose of your wood heater potash. Dump it in your chook yards over the winter months. Break up the lumps of charcoal into small pieces so it can be ingested.
It’s a fabulous natural byproduct that benefits your chooks in more ways than one.
Happy chook keeping everyone. 😊

This is fpr all those Chicken Ladies out there that are on their own. You really can do this all by yourself if you have the mind too! I do 😊Where there is a will there is a way and don’t forget to think outside the box. This yard I built on my own. Not quite finished but usable. By the time I have finished it will be fox proof and bloody bird proof 🙈

Pens 1 & 2 are a closer to being complete. Woohoo!!! 6 strands of straight wire run - dang I hate Galv wire, but better to use what you havd thN waste $, and the 1st level of Heavy gauge poultry wire fitted. Just need to do the top lot of wire and fitting the gate and Pen 1 will be done. Pen 2, still need to twitch off and tension the support wires and run the Poultry mesh. This one is a much smaller run and is for my Marans I bred this season.
Aaarrgghh I ache and not as fit as I used to be 😆
I also need to highly recommend Bros Warehouse in Oborn Rd Mt Barker for the fencing supplies. Cheapest place around and a good range. Won’t ever buy my fencing stuff from anywhere else again.
