😬 SEPARATION ANXIETY 😭
Avoiding this largely human created condition

Separation anxiety really increased during Covid when people were bringing home new dogs and not teaching them to be comfortable alone.

I work from home, I come and go so often that I literally bore my dogs with my constant movement that they tend to ignore my coming and going but there is one thing that I do to ensure my dogs are ok on their own…

No, it’s not more dogs 😜

It’s called dog time, even when I’m home, you can spend time outside especially when it’s such lovely weather!

Introducing a dog to this is incremental, they might first go out in their own for just a minute or 2 with some type of enrichment and then build from there.

If you can’t leave food/toy enrichment out with multiple dogs then you’ll build up the alone time incrementally as well.

Not making a big deal about your coming and going will help your dog not make a big deal out of it. I will simply walk out the door like a live by myself. When I come home, I just come in and carry on - if I have a new dog such as foster and they’re excited then they will be ignored until they show calm behaviour and then I’ll reward that with some calm attention.

Separation anxiety is largely human created by humans not letting dogs have time to themselves and rewarding anxious and over the top behaviour.

Reward the calm and reward can simply mean acknowledging the dog all the way to calmly stroking it in a way it likes (you’ll be surprised how many people touch dogs in a way the dog doesn’t like).

Some dogs separation anxiety is so out of control they end up on medication and having to work with behaviourists - that’s a tough way to live.
