We woke up this morning to the devastating discovery that our beautiful Rosie bear had passed away peacefully in her sleep during the night 😭 Other than not finishing her dinner last night she seemed fine, 14 and a half wonderful and very healthy years is pretty good for a Labrador and she has loved and has been loved for every one of them, if given the opportunity she would be still happy to chase a ball right until the end πŸ₯°

I terribly regret not giving her an extra cuddle last night when putting her to bed, please give your fur babies extra hugs, you never know when they won't be there anymore, missing you beautiful girl πŸ’”πŸ˜

Puppies do not just grow during play and training.
They grow during rest too.

Sleep supports learning, emotional regulation, recovery, memory and healthy development. Many puppies need around 18–20 hours of sleep each day, and overtired puppies are often more bitey, restless and unable to focus.

Short bursts of activity followed by proper rest can make a significant difference in behaviour and training progress.

Among other things, I also offer Puppy Foundation Training in Canberra, helping puppies build calmness, confidence and practical life skills from the beginning.

People often say they β€œlove dogs” β€” but respecting a dog’s space is part of loving dogs too.

Today I had a small dog lying calmly on her blanket with a clear sign on the leash saying:
β€œIn training β€” please ignore.”

Another couple approached with their dog and said,
β€œHe wants to say hello.”

I politely replied,
β€œShe’s in training, please don’t come closer.”

The reaction?
Upset. Offended. Shocked that I said no.

This is something dog owners and trainers deal with constantly.

Not every dog needs to greet your dog.
Not every dog wants interaction.
And training moments matter.

When a handler asks for space, it’s not rude. It’s responsible.

Some dogs are learning neutrality.
Some are nervous.
Some are reactive.
Some are recovering from bad experiences.
Some are simply practising calm behaviour around distractions.

The biggest problem is that many people still believe dogs should meet every dog they see. They don’t. Constant forced greetings often create frustration, over-arousal, leash reactivity, and poor social skills.

A well-socialised dog is not a dog that says hello to everyone.
A well-socialised dog can calmly ignore others and stay connected to their handler.

Please don’t take it personally when someone asks for distance.
Respecting boundaries helps dogs succeed
