Hi all its almost that time of year again where our reptiles start coming out looking for a feed and a mate ππ¦. So now is a good time to start cleaning up your properties before the season gets in to full swing.
1. We can start by keeping and maintaining our lawns cut low to help prevent snakes wanting to come across our yards. Snakes dont like being out in the open this doesn't mean they won't quickly cut across if they have to but this will give you clear sight of your yard and where it went.
2. Try and clean up any old rubbish piles that might make a great spot for snakes to move in or breed up rodents. Things like Sheets of tin , lengths of timber , Fire wood piles , House hold waste , Old car wrecks , Stone piles , Blackberry heaps. If you can remove there shelter and food source's then the only snake you should see if any should be just passing through as now they dont have a reason to hang around.Try and keep on top of rodents Tiger snake's especially love a good feed of rats, mice and rabbits.
3. As the summer gets hotter and dryer all our wildlife start moving around looking for water and this can bring snakes and lizards closer to our homes. If you have any leaking taps or pipes now would be a good time to give attention to them not only water is getting wasted but could be another reason for snakes to come close to homes and properties trying to get a drink. You can also pop ice cream containers around your property boundary and fill with water this can help keep snakes and other critters from coming up to the house. If you want to do this dont forget to put some rocks in the container to stop them blowing away and if any small critters fall in they can get back out and keep filling with water. If possible bring your pets water inside or in a place where you can see it and what's going around it. All these tip will not guarantee you won't see a snake on your property but will make it less snake friendly and less desirable to take up residence. Hopefully if you do see one its just passing through.
